In welder test, does it necessary to carry out PWHT if it is required on the WPS? Can we apply QW-301.2 where preheating and PWHT are omitted during performance testing? Our client requests to conduct PWHT after welding on welder test.

From a code perspective, you are correct; the PWHT may be omitted for welder qualification. However, it seems clear that your client is requiring PWHT. If this is in one of their specifications, you can present this clause from ASME IX to make a case, but you will need to get the specification changed or have a variance developed. Or just respect their wishes and have PWHT performed.


QW-301.2 Qualification Tests. Each organization shall qualify each welder or welding operator for each
welding process to be used in production welding. The performance qualification test shall be welded in accordance
with qualified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), or Standard Welding Procedure Specifications
(SWPS) listed in Mandatory Appendix E, except that when performance qualification is done in accordance with a
WPS or SWPS that requires a preheat or postweld heat treatment, these may be omitted.

If the client is willing to pay for it as an extra you can PWHT. Otherwise, it is not required as stated above.

please also noted that the purpose of WQT is verify the welders ability to do welding or soundness welding.... making PWHT is verify the PROCEDURE weldability which different from WPQT

If bend tests are required by the Customer, you may need to PWHT the test coupons when the weld is too hard without PWHT.
