I'm looking for some references pertaining to a "grout pocket" foundation (contractors description, I haven't seen it yet). An existing square tube column was sheared off after being hit by a car and the owner wants to re-erect the canopy based on the original framing design, i.e. replace the column with the same. The original foundation consisted of setting the tube column 4 to 5 feet into the ground and pouring upto grade with concrete. It seems reasonable, just looking for a reference or other experiences.

The column (6"x10") is set onto a 5'x5' spread footing and encased with 4'x4'x40" of concrete up to grade level, (around only). The contractor wants to just use the original plans and rebuild.

I have used this type construction for outdoor canopies, using on-hand (oversized) structural steel members, at industrial sites. Place enough concrete, and it works well. Sounds like you have enough concrete - the fact that the column sheared (without damage to the foundation, I assume) was a good "test".
