What kind of engineer am I??

To Hokie: Yes, I went to Lafayette. You didn't go there, did you? Is your first name Matt? To Gymmeh: I actually had never realized you could just go ahead and take the FE. I thought you had to already sort of be apprenticing with a firm. I believe I am qualified to take it, now that I've...

What kind of engineer am I??

To Twoballcane: Yes, I am definitely a generalist. For better or worse, I will always be, but I think of myself more as a "Jack of All Trade, Master of Some" Eventually, I will operate my own business, whether it's strictly engineering related or not, but before then I would like to get some...

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

The Weatherhead part looks great, but it would probably only work if the outside thread was NPT and the inside was straight. I would guess no one makes eye-bolts with NPT threading? Ha.

Suitable adhesive to bond wood to ABS

Interesting. I'll give that a go too. So far I've tried a gel epoxy, silicone, and wood glue. The wood glue held up horribly. No surprise. The epoxy held up to a moderate 'peeling' force, but somewhat gave way to vigorous peeling. The silicone sealant has held up well to any kind of 'peeling'...

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

Regarding quantities, I'm talking 500 total. I build large sculptural art, so each piece is kind of like a prototype and production piece all at once. In light of that, it sounds like the push in method might work. I was worried about the strength of that method, but our loads are low, so it...

What kind of engineer am I??

Good advice. Any preferred resources on keeping up with what engineering fields are emerging, or are 'new'? I have a general idea of the newer technologies and applicable industries, but I wouldn't mind some reference. Any ideas? DHD

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

Looking through all those recommendations, above, it seems like maybe the best thing would be a barbed threaded insert that's installed using an ultrasonic or heat installation method. Does anyone have some advice on where to learn about those methods? I'm looking thinking about using...

What kind of engineer am I??

That sounds horrible. No offense to patent lawyers.

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

Handleman, How would I bond the weld nut to the ABS? I've heard of using heat or ultrasound, but don't know the details. Would you suggest one of those techniques? DHD

Suitable adhesive to bond wood to ABS

Thanks. I'll add those to my experiments. Cheers.

What kind of engineer am I??

Just to clear up what my BA program was... I took all the typical core engineering courses that anyone would who is pursuing a ChemE, EE, ME, whatever, then took a few electives in different specialties. Then last year or two consists of taking economics, business, management, and policy...

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

The eye bolt serves to let another bolt pass through it's loop to attach to a piece of polycarbonate that rests on top of the ABS, attached at a 90 degree angle. I'm not sure how to quantify the loads. I'll have to think about it. A washer would be fine, but the eye-bolt can't pass "through"...

What kind of engineer am I??

hahaha... I'll remember that when I'm your boss. ( very kidding. haha )

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

Hmmm... Never considered that. Sounds expensive. I'll need 500 pieces, actually.

What kind of engineer am I??

My school had top notch programs for chem, EE, etc., for a liberal arts school, at least. I just could never make up my mind. I also grabbed a philosophy degree. ha. I've gained such an appreciation for product development and more design oriented stuff since then, however.

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

Well, That's the other part of the story. I'll take a step back. I am starting with 1/4" ABS. My end goal is to have an eye-bolt ( say 10-32 ) protruding from the "top" side of the ABS. Whatever hardware is on the other side needs to be flush ( a slight flange is fine ). The side with the...

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

I think I am looking for something closer to a 'thread reducer'. Want machine threading on both the inner and outer surfaces. I'd saying something like 10-32 inner and whatever size the o.d. has to be to make that i.d. threading work. Ideally, it would have a flange so it could be passed...

whoa. that's news to me: Mechatronics nice.

Am I looking for a "threaded insert"?

Hello, I am looking for something quite like a threaded insert, but threaded on both sides. In other words, I could take this part and attach it the same way I would a nut and a bolt, but the end result would be a hole for a smaller bolt to fit inside. Am I making myself clear at all? Does...

What kind of engineer am I??

Sure. Would love to be in management, but it seems like someone would have to do something specific for a company to gain experience in order to move up to a management position. Has this been your experience? The one thing I could somewhat easily do is move into some kind of Construction...
