Dear Engineers
I have been asked by a local builder to design a post to support his house.
The builder had built a single-storey extension on the rear of the house and then taken all the walls out from inside the ground-floor except for a couple of partitions. To support the upper-floor, the...
The dowels are to hold the top and bottom sections of concrete together, nothing more. I got the idea from a previous thread I submitted on this learned forum. Wires were suggested to hold the skins together but we decided on pre-cut dowels as less fiddly.
You seem to be ignoring the...
Dear Engineers
I am wanting to check the design of a reinforced concrete-slab that has glass-block voids and a band of insulation (please see attached). The slab is constructed in two parts; with the glass-blocks laid out, the bottom rib, which contains the reinforcement, is poured first and...
Hello
I am wanting to assess the strength of polystyrene and have obtained a data-sheet for the material we are going to use Attached).
I am not sure why there are two compressive strengths (@1% and @10%). I suspect it may be due to the compression of the material.
Can anyone educate me on...
Hello
I am wanting to sandwich a dense-polystyrene-board between two skins of concrete and I am seeking an adhesive that will bond the polystyrene to the concrete. The adhesive will be subjected to some horizontal-strain but not excessively.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

I am getting somewhere. A chap on the Autodesk form got the principles to work (attached) but I haven't had time to look into it. Change the dimensions in the palette and the array moves. The variable are stored in an ini file somewhere which may be manipulated using a script language...

I want to control the block from the properties palette and then I will control the block using AutoCAD's SDK functions (C#). The block needs to be 100% programmable with no screen interaction (no grips eventually).
I have a similar model that works in Revit perfectly and in 3D, gives me a...
Dear all
I have drawn a parametric-block that I want a dynamic-array to follow. (attached)
The array has a grip that has to manually pulled. I want this grip to go as I want to manipulate the block from a an external source.
Any tips please.

I have been looking for a parametric model program for a while now and the best is Revit. TurboCAD say parametric in their literature as do Solidworks. All very expensive (My Revit and AutoCad cost me close to £5000 and £900 per annum subscription).
Check out LibreCAD for open source...
Dear FlashSet
Thanks for the links. I have put together, what I hoped, is a simply supported beam with a UDL of 1kN/m. (attached). I ran Frame3dd and got a result but its wrong but a result all the same.
If you are familiar with Frame3dd, would you look at my input file to see if my mistakes...
Hello
I have downloaded frame3dd and openGL and I want to use it. Any clues please. The technical help is not much good but I 'kind of' understand the templates and examples that came with the download. I just need someone to steer me in the right direction.
All tips and examples greatly...
Hello
I am wanting to calculate the deflection in a manhole-cover I am drawing (attached).
The concrete is effectively a reinforced-slab with the reinforcement welded to the steel-frame. The frame is 5mm thick (or more depending on my calculations).
How should I calculate the deflection...
When I was a student, I attended a lecture on three-dimensional stress analysis on a slab. The lecturer gave the proof for three equations solving the indeterminate structure. Most of the math was above me at the time but I did recognise that the equations were very similar to Macaulay-theorems...
Dear all
Great links.
I have been 'reading-up' on the behaviour of small thin-slabs under various load conditions for over a year and I think I am slowly getting 'there'. What I found surprising, given the number of enquiries there are for moments on slabs - UDL, concentrated, etc. - there...
Dear all
I have spoken to the engineer that provided the revised equations 10 and 11. Chris (the engineer) worked out the equivalent-UDL for the concentrated-load and supplemented the equivalent-UDL into equations 10 and 11. I have not done the check but the solution is very elegant. Any load...
Thanks for the response.
The slab is simply-supported and allowed to lift at edges. The spans are not equal ranging from 1:1 to 1:4. I am designing a slab 1500:1900mm (1:1.3) but I want to be flexible and cover all ratios, hence a formula.
I have looked at Roarke and the situation I am...
Hello
I am trying to find a formula that I could use in a spreadsheet for the bending-moments of a simply-supported two-way slab under a concentrated-load (similar to equations 10 and 12 of BS8110). The load is 300-mm square.
Any references or guidance would be appreciated.
