Dear EngAddict,
This is my solution, I would be interested if you thought there was a better way of producing the part?
Thank you as always.

I have a flat plate with an angled central cut out to which I have applied 8 flanges at an angle.
I now wish to apply a further 7 flanges in the opposite directions as per flange 11 on the attached drawing.
Can anyone tell me why I managed to get flange 11 to work but I cannot get a mirror...
Dear EngAddict,
Thank you once again for your informative reply.
I am slightly bewildered by your suggestion and wonder if once again you have an example you could kindly let me have sight of; or failing that, the url of a tutorial on the process.
Thank you once again I am truly grateful.

Dear EngAddict,
Just a quick update to say that I am staggered that I am able to control all the various files/models from the one top level rule.
So to reiterate - thank you so much.
cjj
I have only really just started to build the assembly but this is what my code looks like thus far...
Dear EngAddict,
Thank you once again for your kind explicit explanation and sample model.
I have played around with your model for about a couple of hours, adding additional components and seem to have got the hang of it.
No doubt I will get confused as I build my assembly but once again...
Dear EngAddict,
Thank you, I had come to the same conclusion by trial and error.
Thank you for modifying my model too.
I wondered if you could possible help me with my querie regarding writing an external rule please. I have asked it as a new question.
Thank you once again.
cjj
Dear EngAddict,
I managed to get the model to loft OK in the end and it updates OK when I change the MultiValue selection under the parameters in each of the files. So thank you so much.
My next task is to apply an external rule which will be activated upon opening say the top level file and...
Dear EngAddict,
I apologise for not making myself clear.
What I am trying to do is produce a parametric version of what the subtraction of the derived parts achieves but as a solid.
When I try to Sculpt the 3D sketch as per your kind sample it seems to automatically use the inside profile...
Dear EngAddict,
I have attached my model of my derived parts "New Cap.ipt" and you will see that I am struggling to get the sketches to work.
Would it be possible to ask you to have a quick look at it please and let me know what I am doing wrong?
I am trying to produce a solid model of the...
Dear EngAddict,
As much as I regret admitting it, Inventor already has me hooked although I still miss the command line!
Thank you for your kind help, without which I fear I might now be back with MDT.
cjj
Dear EngAddict,
Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to generate a sample model for me.
I think my mistake was in trying to use the base model to automatically extract itself from the volume of the cap rather than by sketching on the imported derived part.
Your model has enabled...
Dear Engaddict,
I have derived my sheet-metal component into a new part as a surface but do not know how to use this to creat a new parametric part to fit it, that will adjust according to the original part from which I derived my new surface part?
cjj
Dear EngAddict,
Once again thank you for your kind reply, although I have absolutely no idea how to set about "Derive your component into a new part as a surface?"
cjj
I have come to model the solid cap for my folded sheet-metal component and wondered if anyone would be so kind as to advise me whether I have gone about this in the right manner.
In MDT I would have used one part to subtract from another and thus ensure a perfect fit.
You will see from the...
Dear EngAddict,
I didn't realise I could only upload one file so here is the Inventor File.
Thank you.

Dear EngAddict,
I have come to model the solid cap for my folded component and wondered if you would be so kind as to advise me whether I have gone about this the right way.
In MDT I would have used one part to subtract from another and thus ensure a perfect fit.
You will see from the pics...
Dear EngAddict,
I may have do one tweak to the model a little later down the line and wondered how I could contact you if need be?
Once again thank you so much. In just two replies you have turned 3 - 4 months of futile attempts into a stable model.
I am most grateful.
Christopher
Dear EngAddict,
I have attached my model duly tidied up.
I would greatly appreciate your scrutiny if you have the chance please.
Thank you once again and assuming the model is OK; it is a revelation compared with some of the 150 model attempts I have previously produced.
So a BIG THANKS once...
Dear EngAddict,
I have got to grips with my model and modified it in line with your kind suggestions and the main elements of your model.
Please take no notice of the actual flanges; I sketched anything just to check it worked OK!
The big thing for me is the way you have shown me to use the...
