Mazak Laser having trouble cutting 1/2" Material

Hello, Please forgive my ignorance on this topic. A couple of us have been thrown into the fire a bit and asked to figure out how to run our laser after they let the last guy go. We currently have a 4kW OPTIPLEX NEXUS 3015 FIBER Mazak Laser. It is probably 5 or 6 years old at this point...

Flat Plate Stress from Internal Pressure

Thank you Geoff!! While none of these are perfectly exact to what I am doing, I believe Figure UG-34 (b-2) is very close to what I have. I will need to work through it now but this is very helpful! Thank you again!

Flat Plate Stress from Internal Pressure

GD2, Can you be more specific where that equation is in Sec viii Div 1? I have that and have looked through it for quite some time looking for anything related to stresses on a flat plate or blind flange and I must just keep overlooking the section! Thank you

Flat Plate Stress from Internal Pressure

Thank you for the help! I will update my calc accordingly and I have already found Roark's online to purchase because it seems like a great resource. I was thinking of fatigue strength as well and with my stress value at 1/3 of my yield I did not expect to see a fatigue failure. I have also...

Flat Plate Stress from Internal Pressure

Hello, I am hoping someone on here can double check my calc. I design hydraulic cylinders and my machinists are asking for me to change a design to increase tool life. Essentially I will be taking the thickness of the endcap to 0.175" which is a little bit thinner than my tube wall which...

Chamfer Callout on Through Hole in Tube

Yes it is a thru hole. To cut the chamfer we use a dovetail cutter with a reduced neck diameter. If you look one of those up you will understand how they are used. You put it through to the back side then pull up to machine along your path.

Chamfer Callout on Through Hole in Tube

Thank you for the quick response rothers! I actually figured it out. I think I was just overthinking it, I am still able to section the other way and dimension properly using an angled callout. For some reason I was so sure that it would not allow me to, or not show properly. I thought I had...

Chamfer Callout on Through Hole in Tube

Hello, I recently changed a part for my company and we are going to start putting a backside chamfer on a hole that is cross drilled through a tube. My dilemma is I can not figure out how to dimension this properly! I am attaching an image of the part in question and the only way I can really...

    Powder Coat

TugboatEng, I will absolutely look into this! Compositepro, our plugs are silicone https://www.caplugs.com/p/tapered-silicone-caps-plugs-ts. I find the humidity in the air to be more likely though. We have some plugs that we have been running for up to a year and the inside of the tube still...

    Powder Coat

The furnace is not sealed and I am not sure it would help to do that regardless because we plug the tube first. Purging the air inside the cylinder would be possible but we are building 3500-4500 cylinders a month and purging would add a decent amount of time to the process and the cost of the...

    Powder Coat

It is not a controlled environment (though I have asked for that in the past). That is why I expect that when they insert the plugs in a humid environment it traps that humid air in then it goes through the wash cycle (cools it down), drying (heats it up), then baking the powder coat (450°F) and...

    Powder Coat

Hello, I am a mechanical engineer working at a small company. We produce hydraulic cylinders and we powder coat all of our cylinders. When we powder coat it cant be fully assembled as the heat would melt the internal seals so it is just the welded tube assemblies. We use plugs to prevent any...

    Timing shaft Stress concentration

Sorry for the delayed response. Had something come up last week and I couldn't come to work. Unfortunately we can not flip the rods because a gear is already welded onto the other end. Thank you both for your input. Unfortunately it was quite a few of the shafts that were drilled off center so...

    Timing shaft Stress concentration

I am being asked to approve something but I have no way to verify through calculations so I am hoping someone with more experience can tell me if this is a bad idea. Essentially we have a timing shaft that we through drill and use a spring pin to attach a coupling. the through hole was drilled...

    Hydraulic Cylinder Threaded Gland Design

Thank you all for your input! Cobra, That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much! I will work through this to determine what is needed.

    Hydraulic Cylinder Threaded Gland Design

EdStainless, Thank you for the heads up in regards to the transition from the threads to the ID. I will make sure that is smooth. To help damage to the ID sealing surface, would changing the chamfer to a large radius help prevent any scratches? Also when the threads start, the end of the...

    Hydraulic Cylinder Threaded Gland Design

This should give you all information involved with how these attach. I didn't want to show all dimensions on these parts because they are parts that we are designing to build in house and sell. I think App 2 and App Y do not apply because they are about the force the bolts need apply to seal...

    Hydraulic Cylinder Threaded Gland Design

I will have this drawn with all details soon, but is there something specific you need to know? The material of the tube (outer threads) is st52.3 dom tube, yield strength=52,000psi. The Gland (internal threads) is C12L14 yield strength=75,000psi. I feel like materials with size of material...

    Hydraulic Cylinder Threaded Gland Design

After posting I realized there is a "Fluid Power Engineering" Forum and I probably should have posted there. I do not know how to move this thread so I am hoping someone here will be generous enough to help me out! Thank you

    Hydraulic Cylinder Threaded Gland Design

I am designing a Hydraulic Cylinder with a threaded gland. I have experience designing hydraulic cylinders but never a threaded end. I am looking over my ASME VIII Division 1 codes to try to determine the thread engagement needed but the only thing I have found is section UG-43. Table UG-43 has...
