    Welding set cable length

Does anyone know the relationship between total length of power and earth cable to / from a welding set and the diameter of the consumable which can used? I have a job for which it may not be possible to get the welding set close to the job, and I'm concerned that too big a consumable and too...

    friction coefficient of Loctite 620

unclesyd Thanks - I'd exhausted about every permutation of cutting /pasting/ dragging etc, so I went for the "stick with what you know" option !

    friction coefficient of Loctite 620

The use of Lock Washers was extensivly and informatively discussed in thread 404-161524 in the Mech Eng Other Topics forum. I recommend it.

    friction coefficient of Loctite 620

I don't know if the economics of the job would stand this answer, but if you need accurate pre-tension measurement you might want to consider the Boltsafe product offered by Scansens (see link below). It's a load sensing washer reading in real time. I know they offer larger sizes (I've...

Ever feel like you're in over your head?

In my admittedly cynical experience, it's the ones with the bs that appear on management radar as promotion candidates, whilst the ones who can do the job and get on with it are left to their own devices since they are "more important where they are"! Management easily confuse...

    Flywheel Energy Storage devices

Yates said "On flywheels as an energy storage device, despite what common sense might tell you, the lighter the material used, the more energy you can store in rotation (square-cube law)" Could you expand on that please? My common sense is shouting so loud I can't hear anything else!

Ever feel like you're in over your head?

In my experience, the most dangerous people are the ones who believe they DO know all the answers and are totally confident they're right. The best boss I ever had told me that the trick to being able to sleep at night is knowing what you don't know, and never being afraid to say you've reached...

    You Know You're Old/Young If ...

jmw - starting handles! My Lada came with one of those and the most complete tool kit you could imagine, circa 1990! You're old if you can remember the sense of achievement if you managed to get your car past 50k miles before it needed it's first decoke (can you still get Redex??).

    Question about your (life) partner

nur12 - "Have you noticed how many engineers are married to nurses?" Just a thought, but you don't suppose it could have anything to do with the uniform do you??

    Question about your (life) partner

Likewise - my better half is very caring, everything from children (ours and anybody elses'), old people, rescue dogs, you name it. I guess I wouldn't have it any other way, but just sometimes.............! Nice to know i'm not suffering alone tonight!

    Question about your (life) partner

bpz "The two major benefits as I see it are (1) I don't talk shop at home, because she won't understand/care/listen and (2) she introduces me to a lot of things that I wouldn't be exposed to otherwise" So mine is not the only household where the evening debriefing is one way traffic !!

Need advice on giving tolerances on drawings for parts

dhyperman The first and best reference I ever had was BS 308 - I think it's now part 2 of the Standard that covers dimensioning and the effects of cumulative tolerances. As you say in your example, you can't have the cumulative sum of tolerances within a feature exceeding the overall tolerance...
