Do these deck beams look stable to you?

Section R507.5.2 of the 2018 IRC states that the post to beam connection must resist horizontal displacement. In at least one photo the horizontal displacement does not appear to be resisted. Not very stable looking to me. Simpson's decorative "T" and "L" hardware are rated for uplift and...

Hi I did a standard proctor and got

1.98 PCF? Something seems off with that number. Depending on the type of soil you have that number may have a wide range but more in the 90 to 120 +- PCF area.

Hi I did a standard proctor and got

Plot the points with the moisture content on the X axis and the dry density on the Y axis then draw your curve. The high point of the curve is your maximum dry density. Go straight down to the X axis from the high point of the curve and read your corresponding optimum moisture content.

Design of scarf joint in wood construction

Try these folks. If scarf joints aren't in the design guides then maybe someone there could point you in the right direction. https://www.tfguild.org/timber-frame-engineering-council/standards-of-practice-and-design

Form Release Agent on Steel Reinforcing

I likely will never see a letter of any kind but I have put the burden of this issue where it belongs. Its not up to me to prove or disprove that everything is ok or not. I wasn't the one with the spray wand in my hands. Let them do whatever research and contacting and phone calling and...

Form Release Agent on Steel Reinforcing

All good reading. A lot of that which was posted I had found in my initial research. Some I hadn't. I was sort of dismayed at ACI's stance on this matter. My first order of business is to place this issue exactly where it belongs. I have advised the contractor that this report will not be...

Form Release Agent on Steel Reinforcing

So, today I was asked to review a report, observations, and photographs regarding a site visit to determine if a retaining wall, being constructed on a residential site, was being constructed according to the plans and current adopted building code. The engineering for the retaining wall was...

1" hole drilled in bottom chords of wood truss

Calls for repairs like this are a regular occurrence. Mostly for cut or drilled I-joist flanges but trusses too. Depending on the contractor's "nonchalantness" (is that a word) and size of the cut or hole we may recommend removal and replacement of the truss or I-joist. A few of those...

Connections for Isolated Footings in Existing Typical Light-Frame Home

The owners want you to draw up what they did and stamp it? This is an immediate red flag for me. Walk away from this one.

Hello All, Forgive me if this ha

Do not get involved. The other engineer is the EOR with the responsibility for the design. Some advice for your "guy"... if he can't get in touch with the EOR build what was designed and move on.

Conflict with co-worker / possible acknowledgment form to sign

If intent is not a requirement and only the effect is considered, then it seems as if you are in an indefensible position. In order to avoid a potential situation like this it would almost be necessary to not communicate at all with anyone at work. You have no control over anyone's perception...

no running bond and bearing at the lintel end

This kind of stuff makes my eye twitch. If you are sure its incorrect, then have the contractor tear it out and rebuild it correctly. Stand there and supervise if you have to.

Conflict with co-worker / possible acknowledgment form to sign

You have run afoul of a precious snowflake that is butthurt by a perceived insult and has run to mommy to make the bad man say he's sorry. Maybe you should buy your snowflake some ice cream or a toy to help make it all better. I see more and more of this all the time and its mind boggling to me...

Acceptable moisture content of granular fill

The results of a Proctor test should give you the range. As dik said, the Proctor test will give you the optimum moisture content to achieve the maximum dry density. If your specification requires, for example, that the granular fill is to be compacted in such a manner as to achieve 95% of...

    Longitudinal Split in wood

That looks like the tree pith, especially given the knot locations. Do you have a closer view?

    pre-engineer building terminology

I've seen that a lot in those prefab, install in an afternoon "garages". To avoid the natural disaster rush the ridge comes "prefailed".

Foundation Settlement In Clay Following an Earthquake?

I'm with the change in moisture crowd. What type of foundation does this home have? Continuous footing, slab on ground, basement, etc.? Does the grading adjacent to the home provide for drainage away from the home? Are the downspouts directing roof discharge away from the home? Are there any...

    Concrete Test Sampling

"current industry trends"?? I believe I would need further information and ask the supplier to produce published standards regarding this, eg ASTM, ACI, etc. Alternatively, you could sample from the truck and from the pump discharge and compare the results.

    lapsed PE license experience?

I don't believe it's a huge ordeal. Most likely he will have to get up to date on PDH's and pay a reinstatement fee and/or back yearly registration fees for the lapsed years. If Michigan is his state of original registration then they should be able to send NCEES a confirmation that he has...

Are these trends happening anywhere else?

This thread reminds me of the 5 phases of engineering projects: 1-Excitement 2-Disillusionment 3-The search for the guilty 4-The punishment of the innocent 5-Praise and honors for the non-participants
