Wind loading on external pipe rack

For a pipe rack wind in the transverse direction (Or perpendicular) to the piping will almost always control.

    Subgrade Modulus for Mat foundations

What he said. If you're using 1'x1' plates use the same for the entire foundation.

Column to Base Plate simplified Welds ?

Honestly this is something the engineer needs to be detailing.

    Skid anchorage - overturning

It's always good to check for tension forces in your anchor bolts. More times than not the empty + wind case will always control on smaller/narrower skids. Extremely heavy and wide skids sometimes won't see any tension most of the time.

Flat slabs-reducing hogging moments good practise?

As someone said earlier are you doing finite element analysis using plates? If so this modeling system has the tendency to accrue very high peak moments where you are placing concentrated loads. You can try taking the average moment of each plate rather than the max corner or spreading out the...

    Beam on top of column

There's a bunch of pretty long topics on this website if you google. My take aways for a beam resting on top of a column is the orientation of the bolts relative to the column (inside of the flanges that tends to be more pinned). How thick is the end plate the beam rests on (a thicker plate...

    Slab on ground on foundation

What specifically is the 8" slab supporting within the warehouse?

    Moment Connection Forces

We always design and detail every moment connection for the fabricator on every job. On simple shear connections we usually cover it with a general note for the fabricator to design for full shear capacity based on uniform load to produce the largest moment on the beam and specify end reactions...

    Anchor rod in bearing

What group effect are you referencing? ACI recommends the 4 x Da for untorqued anchor bolts and 6 x Da torqued anchor bolts. If you are following this then as referenced above checking all of your failure modes the lesser design strength will control.

    Anchor reinforcement for shear

Per PIP we typically do 12 x Da and call it a day if there’s minimum tension.

Moment Frame Connections Design Guide or Pre-qualified Details?

Check out AISC Design Guides 4 and 16. Design Guide 39 just recently came out in the past year with a ton of examples.

Steel connections to beam bottom rather than centreline

This is pretty typical for industrial vertical bracing. Example: On our drawings we show the work points typically to the center of the member but the chevron gusset brace is always on the lower flange. If you follow the path they still go to the center “node” of your member or depending on...

How you design your Chevron Braces

Design the braces to take both gravity and lateral forces because most likely you won’t have control over the order they erect and set everything. We like to keep our unity ratios to a 0.5 max on WT’s rotated because of eccentricity, double angles and W beams is fine to go up to 1.

    Slab on grade software

SPMats is probably your best bet. MAT3D let’s you create irregular shapes not but it’s harder to differentiate different slab thicknesses all over the place.

Cap plate for Pipe - How can release moments?

The reality is this connection will transfer some type of moment. I’m curious what type of axial/moment forces this will be seeing.

    FOS for Overturning with Testing

Whichever one you pick stick with it for consistency. We use ASD service load combinations to check stability of foundations.

Effective Slenderness Ratio (RISA vs STAAD)

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m going to make a model side by side as a test to make sure. Correct. Thanks for your reply!

Effective Slenderness Ratio (RISA vs STAAD)

I'm modeling a small elevated platform for a client and I came across something I wanted to get some clarity. Lets say you have a simple C6x8.2 Channel braced at each end and 12ft long. Why is it that STAAD flags the channel for slenderness and RISA under the same conditions doesn't? Is my...

    Frustrating Slab Design

Clients like the one your dealing with never come with happy endings. In honesty they are looking for a yes man or someone they can push around. If this client wants you to design and seal drawings based on “assumptions” if anything happens they’ll point their fingers at you faster than you...

Typical grating resistant to Sulfuric Acid

The grating will be covering a 26’-0” x 3’-0” linear trench within a containment area designed to contain 93% max solution of sulfuric acid if spilled. The likelihood this actually sees the acid is very low and from the responses it may be best to have the client use typical carbon...
