Economic Analysis/ Impact Analysis reference works?

My career seems to have taken a turn towards more planning than I had ever intended. I find myself dealing with economists and impact analyses a lot more than I thought I ever would, and I don't have any education in that world. I'm looking for some reference works that I can use to train...

Oroville Dam Spillway Concrete Failure (Feather River Flooding, CA)

If you've ever been involved in anything that made the news, you know that they get pretty much 95% of everything kinda sideways with alternative facts when they rush to report on anything, a mixture of ineptitude on the topic of discussion and framing the story for the most clicks possible. I...

Engineering standard to determine if DOT has been under/over testing highway during construction

Sampling varies according to activity, risk, and many other factors. On top of that DOTs write their own rules, and are not beholden to only do the minimum standard. From the perspective of your project, if you work for the consultant/contractor, the owner is monitoring your work and you are...

Textbook recommendations for learning structural analysis and FEA

My favorite book on FEM for structural analysis is Matrix Analysis of Structures by Aslam Kassimali. It's used enough in schools that if you do some googling you can find a solution manual (and even the textbook sometimes). Goes through 2d and 3d structures of different types and the...

    Czech Gym Roof Failure

I played it without sound. My bad! I thought it was steel with an intumescent coating.

    Czech Gym Roof Failure

Great example of why steel yielding before failure is so important. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgPjLDOjtTU&vl=en the video for those interested

Berkeley Balcony Collapse - CSLB Action Against Contractor License

I assumed they needed 3/4" thickness and had thin 1/4" OSB, so triples to get the same thickness.

Berkeley Balcony Collapse - CSLB Action Against Contractor License

    > For example, the contractor used 3 layers of OSB decking instead of plywood as called for in the construction drawings/specs, but plywood, if not protected any better than the OSB, would not perform significantly better with regard to decay resistance, not to mention the decking was not the...

    Practical structural design course

@KootK I've seen that page before but for some reason it didn't register that you could sign up and take the class over the internet - I thought it was in person. Definitely looking into it. Thanks!

Berkeley Balcony Collapse - CSLB Action Against Contractor License

So the contractor basically did nothing to protect the cantilevered wood elements from moisture, and ignored all the requirements for waterproofing and water resistant materials. Pretty tragic way for 6 people to die. I wonder if criminal action is to follow.

Bldg Collapse in Sioux Falls, SD

From what I can tell there's still one person trapped under there (At the time of this post) a construction worker. They said he had been banging making noise previously but had stopped. Terrible.

Shear Load for Large Timber Beams in a Bridge Deck

Why do you think the material choice between sawn timber and glulam changes the shear load? The shear load is essentially code defined based on standard loadings and arrangements. Distribution would be based on the reasonableness of the assumptions in distribution. I believe it points out...

What does it mean when an architect asks me to provide a quote to do "Civil Engineering".

How are we going to know an architect's intended scope of work for your firm? Just talk to him and clarify what is included in the scope of work.

Construction defect in basement slab under stairs in crawl space-do I need to fix this? How?

Don't forget a sill gasket to be a barrier between the concrete floor and the new sill plate, even if its PT. https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.sill-plate-gasket---3-12-inch.1000660982.html

    Bridge Collapse in Italy

The video makes it horrific. Where I live the road inspectors/contractors have authority to close bridges in these situations with a phone call.
