This is the exact question I've been asking some of my firm's senior engineers to shed some light on in the last two weeks without much luck.
I debated this question with myself at my last job (was an operations engineer) and decided at the time I preferred pump/check/iso mainly because we saw...
[sad]I went ahead and reviewed the Oregon Statutes and got the impression you had to be licensed. So I asked my licensing board and they replied with the relavent section of the law and stated:
"Therefore, the use of the title Facilities Engineer is defined as an act constituting the...
MechEng, thanks for the straight talk, I needed it. I went ahead and read my state's PE laws and you are correct. I will have to talk to my manager about what I'm supposed to put on my business card/e-mail signatures.
Would putting EIT on card/letter head/email explicitly help anything? I don't...
Can you provide a diagram of your setup? Are you saying you already have a heat exchanger and unsure of correct sizing for the application? You need to determine the performance parameters of the coil as well as its physical sizing.
Rough estimation based on given states, I get a cooling load...
Ah, great explaination. Do you use a current limit to prevent surging? Or does the PLC "throttle," for lack of a better term, chiller capacity to prevent this high pressure differential?
Either way, sounds like it's time for me to speak with my Trane rep/engineers for some more information on...
You would be correct. Our two towers are controlled via floating setpoint with WB as the process variable. We are supposed to have chiller redundancy (N+1 1250 ton chillers) but cooling loads have increased to a point where we reguarly stage a second chiller on during summer days.
Why do you...
Is it normal to have chilled water plants that do not stage up a 2nd cooling tower before a 2nd chiller?
I would expect that having two cooling towers (2 towers 1 pump = 1/2 flow to each tower) at the same flow rate would increase the latent heat rejection to atmosphere and prolong the stage up...
DRWeig - I have seen uninsulated condensate & chilled water piping indoors, but the people with offices below said piping were not so thrilled with that value engineering decision.
MintJulep, I completely agree there is a lot to learn. The best part of my job is that my supervisor is a very competent & experienced I&C engineer and is willing to answer any questions I have about I&C. This is great information to learn for my career, I just want to make sure my core...
TheTick, I am not asking for someone to tell me what to do. Please don't be the senior engineer that complains when younger engineers are ASKING for your opinions and experience. If you must have such a negative attitude, DON'T respond.
I think I would agree project management is not...
Hello all, I'm a recent ME grad looking for some advice from those of you with experience. I have been working at a semiconductor company for just over a year now in an operations & maitenance role.
My main concern is my role's ability (or lack thereof) to help me increase my engineering...
Simply that, I want a hand held sensor to take to sample points near BMS transmitters to determine the drift/accuracy present. The plant transmitters are 10 years old and to my knowledge have never been calibrated post-base build.
I don't need high levels of accuracy as this not a critical...
I'm looking for information on hand held psychormeters/hygrometers and am wondering if anyone has had good experiences with particular brands/models. I'm looking for accuracy around +/-.5% RH for lab humidity transmitter validation.
Any recommendations?
I'm looking for a resource explaining the theory behind pre-heat control with adiabatic humdification in a MUAH. Mainly, I want to better understand the correlation between required enthalpy of OSA (pre-heat), humdification demand (# h20/hr), and absorption distance.
Anyone have some ideas?
Jboggs, thanks for the reply. I agree with what you are saying. I don't have a lot of experience and I need more of it. I want to gain experience, but without feedback on my work it will be very difficult to identify strengths and weaknesses from an objective standpoint?
I will have to...
Background: I'm an entry level mechanical engineer (~1 year at current employer) and have been given responsibilities equivalent our senior engineers with 10+ years experience. I’ve recently have had red flags come up regarding my desire to stay with my current employer.
Situation 1:
I was...
Why are you trying to turn a constant flow primary loop into a variable flow primary loop? Can your chillers even accomodate that much extra flow through them and still operate efficiently? My guess would be no without any other knowledge of the equipment.
Why not use a de-coupler loop between...
Has anyone been involved with recommissioning 260 ton screw type chillers from Trane? If so, what issues did you run into? I am skeptical that it will be as simple as recharge the refrigerant and have a turnkey startup.
The units were originally commissioned in 2000 and mothballed in 2005 when...
