Contact with bolts - different results SHELL vs. SOLIDS

Hello! Below is a figure of what I am struggling to compare. Standard friction contact defined between plates. 1st load step is preload, 2nd load step is shear load. I am checking dependency of friction change onto how shear load is distributed between bolts and friction at contact. For solid...

    Ansys displacement calculation

Hi Folks, I understand Ansys solves static problem by following steps (showing just those important to my question, order is important): 1. Material is assigned to elements 2. Shape functions and stiffness matrices are created basing Young's modulus E 3. Calculation of displacements 4...

Improve my planning, time management etc.

Just to note, here is a nice explanation of what I use, see how to use this simple system. Maybe you can use it too. Cheers!

Improve my planning, time management etc.

What we have said till now: Thanks for your answers so far! It's a great resource to consider other's approach. It seems each one of us has gone through different set of experiences and yet I think in essence we look for something very similar. Such a time management method should be simple...

Improve my planning, time management etc.

Hi Folks! Have you ever been interested in any time management systems? How to schedule your day, week or month better so you can get more things done, etc. And yet I love when it would be simple as for us engineers, we need to have things ready to be applied :) The one I liked very much is...

Does this bolt see bending or not?

Could you tell me please how would you model bolt with what elements in case you would like not to use solid elements, no preload and no contact? It could be for example beam element with rbe3 or cerig as spikes, or revolute joint, etc. What is your best experience?

Does this bolt see bending or not?

STpipe, you've touched the exact point in your thinking above. FEA and hand calculation will provide two different results for forces in bolt. The problem is, in both cases I am using Eurocode 3 to validate bolts. Eurocode 3 does not have any formula to check bending of a bolt. Perhaps this...

Does this bolt see bending or not?

There is 1 mm gap to avoid mesh connection between the tubes. Hand calculations: Load M=5kNm, distance between bolts L2=100mm, axial load per bolt F2=M/L2=50kN. Displacement plots for both bolts:

Does this bolt see bending or not?

I have checked the model. Displacements on both sides are good. The thing is that FEA captures bending in the bolt, while the same bending cannot be found out of simple hand calculation. And as this simple model shows, bending in the bolt can cause significant tensile stress in bolt in addition...

Does this bolt see bending or not?

The plot shows displacements. Left side displacements are small in comparison to the right side, but I agree that it should be the same actually. There is no contact, I want to create just a test model, same reason no preload. Boundary conditions: all translations fixed at the left end surface...

Does this bolt see bending or not?

Hi all, Picture below explains the system. I have a solid model with moment load at one side and fixation at other. Two tubes are connected with two bolts to check moment transfer. F2 is obviously larger than F1 due to different levers lengths. FEA shows high stress at bolt's shaft mainly due...

Fatigue – when weld detail is „starting to be“ the base material detail?

Hi All, The question is how to select proper reference stress when weld detail (fatigue category 112) is „starting to be“ the base material detail (fatigue category 140). In other words for what X-position one should use category 140? Please see the picture:

    L-Flange bolted connection

retired13, if you are aware that some of the books you think of, contains that particular connection it would be truly supportive if you could share the name and authors of this book.

    L-Flange bolted connection

Hi, I am looking for a reference in English which would contain formulas required to check following L-Flange connection (please see picture below): Do you have any and may share? Regards!

What does the FEA process look like at your company?

I once worked in a company which was better in creation of quality processes than in FEA (say, Company A) and once in another company which was better in FEA than quality of the process (name it Company B). This is how the process looked like: COMPANY A 1. Clarify with Client any technical...

Book on debugging FE model, do you know any?

Hi All, As in subject, I am looking for some book or other good reference which would treat about debugging the FEA. E.g. troubleshooting contacts (or other non-linearity) and solution convergence in general... any kind of debugging guidance document on FEA is welcome. Regards !

Best book for >>Strength of Materials<< stress reference

cdill21, thanks! There is no specific example though. But if I were forced to come up with one, I would say I would be happy to see investigation on normal and shear stresses in the compressed, bent and torqued beam which cross-section is a circular tube, but with a cut along the length. Any idea?

    APDL Script/Commands Editor

So far I am using Notepad ++ to create my scripts input files. Is there any editor that would be able to show syntax of APDL commands when writing them? And perhaps would be able to auto-finish/propose commands that you start to write? Example: user writes in editor EMODIF and editor shows him...

How to connect part meshed with and without mid-side nodes ?

Thanks for article. These are my observations: a) Element merging is possible only when elements are "identical in all aspects". b) Node merging would merge corner nodes, leaving mid-side node without any support, while it should be rather degenerated so mid-side node would get inactive. Not...
