    Brain warm-up requested.

Sounds very weird. My first thought would be to check voltage & resistance on the lines to that 7.5hp motor. Maybe a loose connection or failing wire insulation in the conduit? Might be enough to drag a leg down or shunt enough current to earth to cause issues. That being said, I am NOT...

    Remotely programming PLCs.

A couple of machines came into our plant with eWon modules. They probably work fine, but we never allowed them to be connected. Our corporate IT would take a very dim view of a product poking holes through the firewall. And they would eventually notice it -- cue heads rolling...

Industrial control panel shop (UL) hidden costs?

Don't forget the record keeping and any labeling expenses. Depending on mix of standard to custom panels, it can add up. The company I worked for at the time added the hazardous area panels as well, so even more records, labeling, inspections, etc....

    Career Move

Yes. In most of my career up to this point I have been the sole EE at the various places I have worked at. As Ron said, you get exposed to a variety of diciplines. It is quite a ride, but worth it. Get to know local technical people that sell parts and services to your branch, they can be...

    Calculator bit the dust.....

This is a great thread...but it made me realize that I have not used a real calculator for work -- ever. I only ever needed a simple calculator or the occasional spread sheet. Should I be happy or sad that I have not used the high level maths from my college days? [ponder]

    Namur Output

As both sensors have a NAMUR rated output, the answer is yes. There may be slight differences in switching frequency capabilites, but the actual output power levels and switch capacity are per the NAMUR specs. For future posts, please provide more information on the parts, specs, vendor, etc...

Pew Matics - High Drawl Icks and synchronized lifting.

Hmm. I arrived late to this thread, but could you not use "standard" hydraulic components (versions suitable for use with water of course)? A gear type flow divider with a rephasing cylinder should work well. The hard part will be finding parts made for water service. Link <-- Ways to...

    Recent graduate and unemployed

Depending on what you want in the future, a small company may have a lot of learning potential. I was the only EE in the company for 10+ years... Did everything at one point ... building panels, wiring, design, programming, project management, feild commissioning, sales presentation, writing...

How to Get Green Engineers Some Horse Sense?

One of the best "green" engineers that I work with happens to be a mechanical engineering graduate from my alma mater... They have been requiring a "senior project" for years now. This guy learned teamwork, design skills, critical thinking, welding, and Solidworks among other things. However...

General Purpose Switch in Hazardous Area

Class 1 Div 1 Group A is the most severe gaseous hazardous location. If the barriers will work safely with that condition, it will be fine for Group D.

    override switch

What do you need to override? For instance, Banner makes an enabling switch used for things like hold-to-run applications and manual machine control. Basically, if you let go, or get hit and your hand tightens up in a convulsion, the machine will stop if the switch is wired in properly to the...

Recording the instant an rotating event happens

The output of an approriately sized and mounted photo sensor could signal when the ring flings out. Add to a plc system with an encoder as FACS sugessted, and it should work great to capture the speed at trip.
