    Elliptical concrete column

ChadV I built a spreadsheet to work out the force and moment equilibrium in the section for a given neutral axis depth. I used this then to generate an interaction diagram, I've attached a couple of screenshots. This in a way, is what you're suggesting? As you rightly point out it's technically...

    Elliptical concrete column

No worries Tommy. It is an integral 2-span concrete bridge. The piers will be in-situ pours fully fixed to the pier table and pile cap. I could model a pin connection at the base but as of yet I don't have SI information. Either way I need to design the pier for some amount of bending. once I...

    Elliptical concrete column

Thanks for the input, yes a simplified interaction diagram is the way I'm leaning. Just a lot of iterations/variables when working with an ellipse. A lesser section within the ellipse is not large enough unfortunately. Jae - I'm currently waiting to get SP installed on my machine at work so...

    Elliptical concrete column

The section is 1.746m by 0.946m, 5.3m tall. Axial load is 11866kN with bending at the top of the pier of 6265kNm and at the bottom 4377kNm. Thanks

    Elliptical concrete column

Hi I'm designing some bridge piers (to Eurocodes) which are to be elliptical in section and am having difficulty finding a reference or design guide as to the best way to assess them. Has anyone undertaken a design of this nature before and would have any suggestions? The piers are subject to...

Pre-stressed precast bridge beam modelling - Deflection issues arising from pre-stressing

Thanks for the input. I'll run both methods on this one to confirm everything's doing what it should be doing.

Pre-stressed precast bridge beam modelling - Deflection issues arising from pre-stressing

Hi I'm modelling a precast, pre-stressed bridge which consists of symmetric internal Y beams and asymmetric edge beams. My edge beams experience a horizontal deflection (as well as the expected vertical deflection) due to the pre-stressing loads. This is due to the eccentricity of my tendon...

    Midas Civil - Abutment design

I want to try and reflect the geometry of the bridge as accurately as possible at this stage. I'm trying to capture the resultant forces from the combination of the sloped abutments and deck. Looking at it since yesterday I can take a number of reference heights and apply the loading in...

    Midas Civil - Abutment design

Hi I'm modelling the abutments of an integrated concrete bridge in Midas Civil which are sloped at approximately 2 degrees. When I apply earth pressure behind the abutments the reference level that the user selects is assumed to be flat/horizontal. As a result if I were to choose the higher end...

Bridge parapet collision forces to Eurocodes

Thanks, I was able to get the relevant section translated by someone here in the office. The transverse force it recommends is approximately half way between the normal and very high loadings given in 1991-2. There is some logic to that assuming a simple linear interpolation of the loads.

Bridge parapet collision forces to Eurocodes

Hi all I am looking for the appropriate transverse force to use for the design of a bridge deck which supports a H2 class vehicle restraint system. IS EN 1991-2 recommends classes A through D and provides horizontal forces but does not relate them to specific restraint systems (N1/2, H2, H4...
