Hi

I'm designing some bridge piers (to Eurocodes) which are to be elliptical in section and am having difficulty finding a reference or design guide as to the best way to assess them. Has anyone undertaken a design of this nature before and would have any suggestions? The piers are subject to bending and axial loading.

(I have already attempted to design them as circular columns inside an elliptical section but they are insufficient to withstand my loads).

Thanks
Cian

Glad I could help.

Regarding the network error, I didn't notice it. I did have some problems importing the DXF file but I think it was related to the version in which it was saved.

Output looks pretty good... program easy to use? French?

My second first text for pre-stressed concrete was Beton Precontraint by Guyon, way back when...

The program is really easy to use and the language can be set up for english, french, german, spanish, italian, dutch or portuguese. It has a lot of design codes implemented as well as you can see on the attached image. The same software also includes a program for HSS connections and a program for the prediction of temperature development of I and H sections under fire. Odd bundle but I won't complain...

I'm sorry if it looks as if I'm pushing this around but I guarantee that I'm not related at all with the developer. I just think that we can't get any better than this for only 20€ (or more, if we can).

Back when, we also relied on a lot of french language books, especially the ones from the EPFL for steel and concrete structures. Still use them for reference.

Cian_Lynch: I can't view your "calcs" attachment as it doesn't seem to have a file extension, but yes, what you describe is fundamentally what I was thinking. There are a lot of chances to make small errors in the spreadsheet, so it's good that you verified it against a software output as well.
