    Peer Review

The issue may be that the design is not done, it's 65%.

    Hot Tub on Elevated Balcony

Should not be hard. Estimate total weight of the tub, etc. Be generous, possibly as much as x2. Install floor and support under area to support that weight. Should be able to use pounds per square foot, fairly straight forward. Otherwise simply warn them that a balcony will not support a hot tub.

    Revisiting MicroStation

You bet. It's so rare to see anyone anywhere on the interweb discussing Microstation. 1. One of the first things I always do, turn on the command line. 2. You can customize the mouse buttons to do other things. 3. Select has 2 basic modes. One allows continuous adding to the set. The other...

    On-site Engineer/Inspector

Quote- My client thinks that this person would really only be busy on the project 10-15% of the time and could work on other billable work while on site and not busy with site work. Sounds like a great idea, but This is simply not done.

Locating property pins with a GNSS Land Meter

Couple things to add. The GPS on your phone is only accurate to 20-30 feet. 2. I am trying to find the GPS coordinates of the known property pins. I am also interested in Lat. & Lon. However based on my memory of working on survey crews when I was in college, I should be able to get Lat. & Lon...

    Incoming Inspection Details on Drawings

Statement 1 begs the question, Inspected by who? Statement 2 attempts to address that.

RCP Storm Drain Installation - limited vertical clearance

All these solutions are nice, but it seems you need to get the City to go along with the build. Just offering a solution may not satisfy. Proposing a structure in an easement is just a bad idea. You're kind of at their mercy without some sort of pre-approval.

    Bentley

Old guy here. Been using CAD since before PCs, before it had a name. For any of you younger folks out there, some advice- Avoid Bentley products altogether. Years ago they were the best, but since they went public, they changed their approach. I've always upgraded as the company updated the...

Bolting Through Masonry Veneer - OBC Reference

The word says it all, veneer- 1. A thin surface layer, as of finely grained wood, glued to a base of inferior material. 2. Any of the thin layers glued together to make plywood. 3. A decorative facing, as of brick. It's just dead load, you can attach to it, but support must be elsewhere.

    Attractive Drawings

I don't know that you can reject drawings just on poor appearance. BUT, if anything is unclear, ambiguous or missing, would be reject (or comment)

Where to invest time as an EIT

You may just be working for the wrong consultant. In today's economy most civil consultants should be very busy. I worked in civil as a technician and we always had 1 or 2 youngsters around, working on their PE. We kept them very busy doing engineer tasks including some field work (mostly...

    Attractive Drawings

I'm an old drafter. Started using CAD before it was called CAD, late 70s. Back in the day companies used technicians who specialized. Over time and with much encouragement from the software companies, document production has been left to the engineer/architect/professional. Usually left to the...

Just starting out in consulting...how to price this job? (Florida)

Perhaps I'm out to lunch, but doesn't Florida have a steep residency requirement for Professional Engineer Licensing?

is there such thing as a part time structural engineer

Definitely. Worked for years in civil, we often farmed out Structural stuff.

General tips for recent graduate looking to move to the US and find job

With your experience you may also want to apply to construction companies as well as consultants and government agencies. Construction is a dog eat dog world, but they generally pay more than consulting engineers. Any certifications you can get (like PE) will help, but generally none are...
