    BEWARE: 2011 Toolbox/PDMWorks Hazard

thread559-193208 sldsetdocprop.exe does not work in 2011 at least thru SP 1, and converting Toolbox-generated parts to 2011 format within the PDMWorks is perilous in the extreme! I've seen hex nuts and lockwashers transformed into socket-head cap screws, with grotesque mating errors as a...

Hole Wizard holes "Feature" and Rapid Prototyping

Jeff Thanks. Seems like a practical approach if you don't want to model the pilot holes or need to add holes not planned. Do you use CA on ABS FDM parts? Does it have any deleterious effect on the ABS plastic? I've used epoxy saturation to strengthen wood parts this way, especially plywood...

Hole Wizard holes "Feature" and Rapid Prototyping

Chris The idea in this case was to exploit the denser shell of the FDM part by molding the holes to pilot drill size, so the threads would fall in the dense shell area. It didn't occur to me that the Hole Wizard Tapped Hole would be modeled to MD size. Limited imagination, I guess... Dennis

Hole Wizard holes "Feature" and Rapid Prototyping

Chris Just don't spec a hole tapped to receive a threaded insert... Or was your observation sardonic humor? I have used press-in metal inserts in the past, and used drill-size holes per the hardware specs to receive them. Works fine. Got just what I expected. Jeff ANother engineer here has...

Hole Wizard holes "Feature" and Rapid Prototyping

Any user who plans to make prototypes using rapid prototyping methods, and to use tapped holes in a part, should be aware that the Hole Wizard tapped holes are nothing but revolved cuts with a hole callout annotation assigned. This would be fine, except that the hole diameter is the MAJOR...

Toolbox parts reverting to "default" configuration

I insert the hardware I want from TB, then open the part, save it as a copy in my project directory with a descriptive filename and replace the instance(s) in the assembly with the copy. I then open the copy part and delete all but the desired configuration, add custom properties for my BOM...

    Expanding Feature Manager

I have the same problem with frequent and somewhat random expansion of the FM, including folders. It is often the case that one part, folder or subassembly will expand every time I touch the FM to look for something while other entities expand only intermittently. Ctrl-Q and save doesn't seem...

In-context features of multiple-configuration parts losing definition

OK. Call it sporadic functionality, then. ;)

In-context features of multiple-configuration parts losing definition

Scott It seems that the target vertices are unique entities that should be reliably associated with each tube configuration. Each configuration is extruded to a different vertex in the assembly (however, they are sometimes vertices on different instances of the same part). I would surmise that...

In-context features of multiple-configuration parts losing definition

Thanks for the thoughts, all. I suspect that Scott's insight is most accurate, although I am curious as to where in the SW documentation it is stated that extruding one feature go to mulitple vertexes in different configurations will cause problems. The odd thing is that it works for days at a...

In-context features of multiple-configuration parts losing definition

I have a medium-size assembly of piping and tubing components in progress. The tubes are all different configurations of one part; most of them are extruded to length in context. In most cases I mate the tube part base sketch plane and an axis to one fitting, then extrude the single feature...

    BOM WIDTHS

I'm having a similar problem with 2004 SP3.0: THe SW BOM is not word wrapping correctly - the wrap occurs at the first space character AFTER the cell margin, so verbose entries spill over into the column to the right. I tried the Excel BOM and the preview wraps fine but when I exit the OLE...

    Service pak 3

I had SW hang up on a drawing after installing SP3.0. Quoting from a message from my VAR: "I did some check and there was some sort of issue with the SP3.0 install (I know, more "Bugs"). That's the bad news... Now for the good news. The fix was very simple. Simple go to add\remove programs...

AMUSING Solid DIgital Digest POLL SUBJECT

2003 is on SP 5.1. 2004 is already on SP 3.0. If this isn't beta testing, I can't imagine who can afford to be a beta tester. My retired neighbor does some for Microsoft. Maybe SW beta tests with retired users who never have to get drawings out on a deadline and within a budget, so they...

Another change for the sake of change, so we can waste more time figuring out how to fix something that wasn't busted... SolidWorks: SPEND THE DEVELOPMENT MONEY ON QUALITY ASSURANCE AND THOROUGH TESTING. FIX THE STABILITY PROBLEMS.

    Failed to initialise Visual Basic

Have you cleaned out your C:\Documents and Settings\[Log In Name]\Local Settings\TEMP directory by deleting it? If so, see if you can restore it from the recycle bin or create a new one. See http://www.eng-tips.com/faqs.cfm?spid=559&sfid=884&newpid=559 (Thanks Scott)

AMUSING Solid DIgital Digest POLL SUBJECT

"Do you plan to participate in the next SolidWorks beta test?" ..I have a choice? I'd like to propose that users submit SPR's requesting that NO new features be added until ALL the stability issues are fixed - especially those related to the tangible output for lots of outfits: DRAWINGS.

CLICK and HOLD and gO nUtZ.....

I've been having sore wrist/forearm and sensitivity problems, too, especially when trying to hold the mouse stationary while clicking a button. One thing that seems to be helping is a Roller Mouse that has a set of buttons, scroll wheel and roller-slide positioner all located below the spacebar...

    Sketching & drafting commands

It's often useful, when doing a large or complicated sketch, to start with a simplified bounding outline, either in a separate guide sketch or in the feature sketch. Dimension it to set the overall size, then start working in the details. This will help prevent annoyances such as fillet radii...

    Changing Graph Axis from "TIME"

Thanks. I'd found it, no particular thanks to the Help for the "Variable Viewer". The "X-Axis" selection button in the Time History Variables dialog box (accessed through the "Variable Viewer" in the Main Menu ) replaces Time/Step/Substep as the x-axis variable...
