Ward,
I have some ejection seat background. All ejection seat systems have at least one high pressure braided hose. One the ACES II (as found in the F-16, F-15, A-10, B-1, and B-2 aircraft), on either one or both sides of the seat, these high pressure hoses can be found. The fitting on the...
Hey Knobhead,
To tkae your model formats idea a little farther, how about this idea.
I'd like to see an ANSI standardized MCAD file format. Basically, a common file format that every MCAD package could read and write, including all the features and history. This way, if your company changes...
Steve,
I've tried it before but have had zero success. I thought that it may have been the Pro/E encryption, but it wasn't.
I think STEP is still your safest and best bet.

Steve,
I've gone through this exact same thing a little over a year ago with Solid Edge and Pro/E.
The first hurdle is getting the files into Edge. STEP seems to be the best neutral format. However, if there are any little flaws in the Pro/E file to start with, Edge will choke, and you wont...
There is also Pro/Desktop Express which is also free and is downloadable. Sorry, I don't know the address and I don't think that it has an AutoCAD sytle front end.

As far as I know, no, there is no way to define how the "curve" in a 3D Curve is controled.

What you need is a means of doing a 3D sketch. As far as I know, Solid Edge doesn't have that. I had a similar problem in the past before 3D curve was availible. I asked a SE-AE about it and he said to make 2 different surfaces that intersect each other. Then create and intersection curve...
Great, another "mine is bigger than yours" cat fight. I shouldn't complain, seeing how I've been in my share of scarps here as well.
First off, let me start by saying that if someone new makes a post, in this case, in the SolidWorks area, chances are he or she has a stronger interest...
Jon,
No e-mail address?!?!?! I'll take care of that little problem. My e-mail address is donshoebridge@yahoo.com. Kind of tough to forget this way.

McLeod,
SolidWorks uses configurations. Each variation of a part would have a different configuration. This is very similar to Solid Edge's Family Of Parts master part file. In each different configuration, various features (holes...

Not that it matters too much now but...
I think SolidWorks 2001+ can now do that. Text can be placed along a spline or other path, but I'm not sure if the path can change in the Z-axis. I'll have to check.

Simon,
I'm running a Geforce 2 on my 1.2Gig AMD at home and don't have any issues. It seem ok. No strange crashes or anything.

DT,
If you want to see how IV5 fairs against SolidWorks, go visit www.midrangecad.com. The web master informs me that the inventor information is quite accurate since there have been many different people providing data.

Sirius,
The short answer to your long question is, yes! It is well worth going to 3D from 2d and for all of the reasons and assumptions that you just mentioned. Building a 3D vitural fixture around the parts is exactly the way to do it. And yes, it eliminates countless hours of guess work...
Sirius,
I have 4 years of SolidWorks experience as of last week. Except for the past 2 months, all of my time has been spent doing one off's - special machines and test fixtures mostly. If you are receiving or sending CAD data to/from outside, find a CAD package that has the highest number of...
Sirius,
I hope you didn't get the impression that I was beating you up over anything. It's just that as you were discribing your situation, I had a Vietnam style flashback and terror flooded my body. Scary! :)

Sirius,
With regards to your comment which follows; "Some outfits use 2 (or more!) sytems to gain benifits where it suits them. Eg. Solidworks to do solid modelling and Autocad for drafting and other 2d work."
I have done this before, and believe me, there is no benefit at all. The...
There is a web site that has bad designs, but I don't think that it covers major disasters, only simple stuff. However, it's still a great site.
