    Cross Border Engineering Services

Thanks VWW, I was aware of this clause, which is why I was surprised that the License Department said that they don't License firms. Maybe this is only for firms who are based in the state. Very confusing.

    Cross Border Engineering Services

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I figured I give it a chance. I am a licensed PE in Michigan. I received my license while practicing as an structural engineer in the State. I have since changed jobs, and now practice in Canada (I am Canadian). My PE is still valid. I am in...

Model two diaphragms in RAM SS

We have a building we are designing in RAM Structural System. We are fairly new users of the program. The floor diaphragm has a portion I'd like to separate from the main diaphragm. I can't seem to find a place to do this in RAM. Is the a capability of the program? I know I used to do it in CSC...

    Partial Mall Collapse

Yes, I noticed that too. It's also curious that they couldn't see the underside of a lot of the planks, due to the insulation. Seems like we may have a bearing failure here, likey the ends of the precast may have rotted out, or a beam flange went away. This incident may have deep reprocusions...

    Partial Mall Collapse

Looks like they released the onigional engineering report here: http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/395566/algomallscan.pdf The firm who did the report has been sighted for professional misconduct in 2010, according to reports. The PEO is said to be investigating this report, and the collapse.

    Collapse

Another one? Yikes. This site has pictures, before and after. http://www.alancross.ca/a-journal-of-musical-things/2012/6/16/details-on-radiohead-stage-collapse-tragedy-in-toronto-pictu.html On a side note, Alan is one of the best modern rock reporters / commentators around. His blog is a...

    Wind: ASCE 7-10 versus 7-05

Heck, I understand where all the factors have moved, and how to use the new method. I'm just asking why the change was made? What was wrong with what we were doing before? In most buildings (in the mid-west, where I practice) the lateral drift from wind will control. Unlike what dcarr said...

    Wind: ASCE 7-10 versus 7-05

WillisV - well yes and no. Under 2005 ASD I applied 90mph, factored it by 1.0 and backed down the material stress to make it 'safe'. Your description works for LRFD only. It used to be rational. We'd factor up loads for LRFD, and factor down to allowable stresses for ASD. Now with the new...

    Wind: ASCE 7-10 versus 7-05

Funny this should come up. I just had to deal with this issue a few weeks ago. We did a wind calc for a architect client doing an interior reno of an existing tall hotel in Texas. No structures on the job, but the window guy needed design pressures. The owner wanted us to use the 2010 loads...

What is your firm's policy for checking structural engineering calculations?

While I'm not surprised on what everyone is saying about checking (its the same experience at my office), something pittguy12 said got me thinking. While it may be disheartning as a young engineer on your bosses 'feel' for structures, this is something that comes with time. I'm only five or so...

    Steel Shop Drawing Quality

I'm not sure how much teeth we have on the quality requirements. We did say the work was to conform to AISC tandrds, but maybe in the future we need to add stronger language on the quality of the drawings themselves. I did detail 90% of the connections, and just left a few double clips and a...

    Steel Shop Drawing Quality

I agree with all of your sediments. I realize this is a horrible situation, but I was wondering what governs steel shop drawing preparation? Can I give them rules, to which they should live up to? If I just keep rejecting them, and saying they don't meet standard, I can see them having the...

    Steel Shop Drawing Quality

Hi all, I was hoping to get some insight on something. I have a renovation project, fairly small in size, but with some added complexity. The fee wasn't high enough for the 'big guys' to come out to play (general contractor, or subs) so we are stuck with some lower end contractors, in terms of...

    Ambassador Bridge

That's correct Hokie, the federal case surrounds blocking a twin span. While the state case is about the failure to meet contractural obligations while rebuilding the approach ramps to the Ambassador. The real interesting is how the bridge companies lawyers are interpreting the law which was...

    Ambassador Bridge

I live in the area, and cross the bridge almost everyday. This whole thing is a disaster, and is fueled by greed, politics, and oh ya, greed. The Feds want a second, publicly owned bridge. Matty wants to keep his monopoly on the crossing, and duty free gas sales (estimated in the tens of...

    Tower One

In case anyone needed further info, aboriginal Canadians / Americans are free to work in either country without any visa, as long as they have official indian status in one country. In fact on group on the Ontario / new york border started issuing their own passports, which were freely accepted...

Indiana State Fair (Wind?) Rig Collapse

A similar collapse had just taken place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada just a few weeks ago. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/07/18/bluesfest-stage-collapse.html From what has been reported, they are saying a strong downburst was the cause of the Ottawa collapse, but I'm sure the...

Flat Slab Collapse in Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Well, here's some more info. Appears that an additional layer of asphalt was put on the deck recently, by the previous owner. http://www.windsorstar.com/Asphalt+repair+overloaded+parking+structure+engineer+says/3261984/story.html A lot of factors seems to be adding up here, for the perfect...

Flat Slab Collapse in Windsor, Ontario, Canada

More info, the structure was built in 1948. From what I can gather, I think the adjacent level has been roped off, and the three buildings have also been evacuated. asixth, you are probably speaking of Dr's. Dilger and Ghali out of the University of Alberta, they developed stud rails back in...

Flat Slab Collapse in Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Agreed, the lift was probably the straw the broke the camel. I've parked on that structure several times (my favorite thai restaurant is out front). I've never thought that the workmanship of the concrete looked very good. Should be interesting to see how this one turns out.
