Light Gauge Studs with precast flooring

Hi Everyone, Wondering if anyone has experience with Light Gauge Steel Studs and precast (coreslab or other) decking. I have a project where we are using LGS and have typically seen/used comslab or other poured in place systems with LGS in the past. Contractor is quite adamant that coreslab is...

    Playground loading on elevated slab

Agreed regarding 100psf. I would consider a playground an assembly occupancy.

Architect is copy-pasting underpinning design from another project - I'm worried about my risks

Is the Architect a licensed Architect, or acting under the heading of 'Architect' when they are in fact designers. I would be hard pressed to find a licensed Architect providing structural details of this magnitude on their drawings...

Steel Beam Connection to Multi-Wythe Block Wall

Agreed regarding Hit-HY 20. Also, can you not utilize C-Channels vs. steel plates? Will give you some more strength simply due to flanges. CB

    Anchor rod thread length

Thanks everyone - very helpful. And Hokie - that is the nut I was referring to! Thanks for the refresher.

    Anchor rod thread length

Hi everyone. We have run into a problem on a job site. The contractor set the anchor bolts too far into the pier that there is not enough thread on the rod to fully adhere the bolt. I remember seeing a system (I though was Hilti) that can accommodate this site discrepancy. Any thoughts?

    3" copper water pipe

Check with some local Civil Contractors. I have worked on a number of projects with CDC Contracting out of Concord. Ask them and they will point you to a supplier who has some - your contractor is saying this because they can't find it. (905) 738-4303

    Structural Connections

Jenny, As I understand you work for a fabricator, or subcontracted at the least. You must understand that from a EOR point of view we are all in a far too competitive market. For example, if three engineering consultants are to bid on a project, we do not clarify to the Owner that 'connection...

Wrong rafter hanger used in framing - thoughts?

Thanks for all the responses; some variance on a firm decision on which method is better (toenailing vs. hangers) but hey - welcome to structural engineering. To clarify, the rafters have not been notched, and are continuous 2x6 rafters from the ridge beam to the supporting walls. Collar ties...

Wrong rafter hanger used in framing - thoughts?

Good morning all, I am pretty sure I know how I will be responding to this, but was wondering if anyone has ever seen such a blatant misuse of a simpson hanger? The Building Official requested that an engineer look at a lvl 'ridge beam' as the supplier would not stamp it (i was already going...

    Steel Construction Handbooks

If you are working in canada get the CISC handbook (9th edition). There are slight variations with respect to the codes north and south of the border.

Roof analysis - does this sound acceptable

Gentlemen, A wonder thread... This has been my life for the past 5 months and have little to no support from more senior structural engineers as well.. there aren't any. Trying to describe justifications for structural design to Owners and Contractors has been needless to say an art and/or...

    Asbestos Cement Sanitary Sewer

Thanks for the responses guys. I did have the sewer videod and have reviewed teh CCTV dvds. The pipe seems fine to me and i am comfortable commenting on the remaining lifespan. However what I am not sure of are the service connections which have severely rusted. I am hesitant to comment on what...

    Asbestos Cement Sanitary Sewer

Does anyone have an idea on the typical lifespan of an AC sanitary sewer. Sewer is 6" and has been in service since 1974. Any good publications on this issue? Thanks in advance.

    Recommendations on structural 'pocket' book

Good evening. I am trying to find a structural engineer's "pocket book" for quick references and said rules of thumb. Does anyone have a recommendation on a book? Cheers.

    Structural Steel Shop Drawings

Hello all. I am just wondering what the typical shop drawing review process' are in your firms. We typically request that structural steel shop drawings (both fabrication and erection) be sealed by a Professional Engineer. I am wondering if this is out of the norm when compared to other firms...

Reinforced Concrete Wall vs. Block Wall

Thank you. Unfortunately the General Contractor on this project is the Owner. Needless to say it has been a very painful few months. It is a difficult situation, but I have responded to him that we will not do a block wall as this will require re-design and subsequent re-design of architectural...

Reinforced Concrete Wall vs. Block Wall

Our firm has been in the design stage of a three story office building for the last several months and is now in construction. We have specified a 10" reinforced concrete wall internal to the buidling envelope to resist the lateral loads on the buidling. The Owner has asked if we can revise this...
