There was/is a preliminary SAT called the PSAT/NMSQT (which we pronounced "Pee-sat numb-squat"). But it wasn't an aptitude test, just a warm up for the SAT.
 
If you look at the aerial shots, it looks like the bottom quarter of the tower is orientated quite different to the upper bit suggesting it failed at that point and tower folded/buckled initiating the collapse.

 
The guyed towers I have looked at fell in a similar kinked manner due to the falling mast being constrained by the guys. Although there was secondary buckling in the tower mast, the initial cause was excessive slack in the guys or the loss of a guy, resulting in the mast exceeding slenderness and deflection limits.
