Hi all,

We have a supplier that want to use ABAQUS Pipe element for some analysis. we never worked with ABAQUS and we have absolutely no idea what a Pipe element is in ABAQUS.

Do any of guys know where I can find some information about that element? I have look through Simulia website, goole and here and didn't find any definition.

Thanks.

Abaqus calls them cylindrical elements and I believe they are new for CAE in 6.9-EF1.

How are they different from other elements?

I found on the net that there seem to be some elements called PIPE21 or PIPE31H. Maybe it is those elements I am looking for.

Those are 2D beam elements. The cylindrical elements I was referencing are 3D solids.

They are specialized cylindrical beam elements which have internal and external pressure as additional loads. Hoop strain is an additional variable as a result. Note that according to the manual they assume a closed end condition so there will also be an axial strain generated by internal pressure.

Be aware that in addition to all the usual limitations of beam elements, they will not correctly deal with issues such as ovalization at bends - the more complex ELBOW elements are needed if these effects are significant.

Nod Bob, also the elbow elements produce results a lot like fourier elements and can be hard to interpret.
