A vendor furnished an ASME VIII heat exchanger on a hot water heating skid. Circulated water is heated by steam in the ASME VIII stamped plate and frame exchanger. Can the exchanger be protected by a Section IV T/P relief valve or does it require a valve stamped to Section VIII?

The construction code of the vessel should dictate the PRV design. In this case the PRV should be ASME VIII. Why do you want to use a ASME IV design?

Per ISO-4126, only the term Safety Valve is used regardless of application or design.

I recommended an ASME VIII valve, but the vendor furnished the skid with an ASME IV T/P relief valve. Just making sure I'm not off base.

Think you'll find that the ASME IV PRV was more economical to use. Codes are there for a reason.
