Hey all - haven't seen much activity - so I'll just use this to chat a bit about Bali - damn, it is hot and humid here. take a shower and come out, sit down and sweat. Took a walk the other day with my wife from the Oberoi area of Seminayak - walked all the way to the Discovery Mall. She said - "It's not too far". I think she might have been high! It was bloody far!! took 2-1/2 hours - of course she stopped at nearly every clothing and shoe store. The sidewalks here are always on a crossfall - so you always fell like you are walking along the strike but the legs/feet on on the dip. That and the sidewalks are full of "exchange rate" information for currency exchange, motorbikes (they have very few motorscycles here), grates missing over the sewers which are under the sidewalks. Ended up tired and then buying my wife an Acer laptop. Daughter is jealous as it is better than hers. Found a couple of really good pizza shops - you never ever ever want to try a Pizza Hut over here or in India - you wouldn't recognize the product - and of course, it is cheesebread anyway. Lots of restuarants, Aussie tourists (young and old). BTW - the sand here, being volcanic, is jet black - the wasps and other bees love it! Enjoying it here as I am able to see my wife and daughter after a 4 month absence (wife is babysitting the teenacher) - can't wait until she is done with school in December. Get to watch Fox News and Ten Sports - so am catching up on my cricket!!! Hope you are all getting into enjoying your summer - unless you are in OZ and you are starting to enjoy the winter! - Cheers - I'll be back in Sorowako in mid-June.

Hey Big

sounds like fun.

Not that it will come into play but, I have some buds that worship the barrels in Bali. (Surf)

Perhaps you should meander down that way and check out the scenery.

Have fun.

Well at least you arn't stuck with NBC, CBS, etc. Have fun.

oldestguy - how true! Drumchaser - yes, they are known for surfing around here. My daughter took it as part of gym class - she was able to get on her knees but not her feet! One of the Aussie chaps I work with in Sorowako first came to Bali in the early 70s to surf - he also did some up off the west coast of Sumatra - supposed to be something else up there. [cheers]

Well, all - am back from Bali and to the grind. Only 390 new emails in my inbox! Glad I stuck around for my daughter's school's 10th anniversary - Beautiful hotel in Nusa Dua (only one entrance to that part of the island and all cars through security) - Westin - great property. Anyway my wife and I each won a bottle of wine and then I got the great door prize of a night at the Tanah Lot Le Meridian Hotel including 2 games of golf at a pretty nice club. Have until the end of Jan2010 to use the voucher. Think you'd all love a nice little trip to Bali - but don't forget dropping by Singapore and Bangkok too!
[cheers]

Hi bigH,
enjoyed your recounts, it's interesting to note that, no matter the nationality, ladies are pretty much all the same, stopping off shops for what seems to be ages. But, when I stopped off records shops to see and listen to jazz CDs, my wife could not wait 5 minutes. Talk about equality of sexes!
Here I'm enjoying summer, before the earthquake I had to commute 2.5 hours to work, now I've been moved to another office which is just 10 minutes from home.
Hope the reconstruction is as slow as possible! What about a nice and stout aftershock! Ah ah,where's is the devil's smilie?? Ain't I a mean fellow at times??

Another consequence of the Italian earthquake is that LRFD regulations will be mandatory in 2 weeks, previously it should have been in one year.

Mccoy - Time - you are talking "Wimins" time - 1 hour of real time in a shoe, jewelry or clothing store is 5 minutes "Wimins" time; 5 minutes in a CD, Sporting goods, Book store is 1 hour of "Wimins" time. This is universal. Glad to see your commute is shortened; sad to see your LRFD coming into play so soon. Would have hoped that all the documentation for implementation had been destroyed in the quake!! [bigsmile]

BigH...glad you had a nice holiday. Starting to get a bit warm and humid here in sunny Florida. Today was 98 with a heat index of 105+.

Damn, Ron, I have to get my calculator to see what it is in real temp!! [wink] Amazing how is is ALWAYS 33degC in SEAsia and no one dies - but get to 30degC in Chicago and they are kicking off like Obama's fly!!! Keep hydrated!

BigH,
the LRFD stuff has been saved all around, only a cosmic disaster would be able to destroy it.

But now there is something even more worrying here, called local seismic response, I can't believe how messed up it's becoming: Law says one thing, authors say law is totally wrong, owners say it's totally costly, geologists and geotechs don't speak at all, just listen dumbfounded.

Mccoy - read the link to the obituary for "Common Sense". As I said recently in other thread, I am waiting for the day that we have to tie-off to walk up a flight of stairs . . . I'm sending you an email on something tomorrow (hopefully) my time.
