Bill of Materials vs. Detail Dimensions (a reference dimensions question)

Let's say that I am detailing a part that is 12GA x 4" x 6" and I have a Bill of Materials with a Raw Material column that states... SHT: 12GA x 4.00 x 6.00. Would I need to make any of the dimensions (THK, WIDTH, LENGTH) on the detail reference dimensions? I cannot seem to find anything in ASME that explains this and it is a question/discussion between myself and my manager. My presumption is that there should be no reference dimensions, as I believe the BOM column should be considered reference only, but I cannot decide on a final conclusion. Also, any justification documentation would be a bonus.

A part does not have a BOM. If you make a print for a part, you should describe it accordingly. Material in your case is 12GA and etc. You should not include 4.00 x 6.00 in your material description as it causes duplication.

Thank you! I agree completely that the raw material column should only state the material. This has been a disagreement between my manager and myself. I feel as though it is not my job to tell the manufacturer, in most instances, how to make the part, just what the final product should be.

I agree, a part does not have a BOM.
Dimension your part on the dwg, material: 12GA Steel or alum or ?.
Let the shop decide which size to start from.

I should clarify, it is (hypothetically) an assembly BOM with the parts listed and detailed. But, I do agree on letting the manufacturer make the call as to where to start, so long as the finished product is correct.

An assy dwg with BOM is good. Each part should have its own dwg with material callout.
If the finished part isn't correct to the dwg, find another vendor.

Your "assembly BOM with the parts listed and detailed" is to show how your components are put together to meet function and performance of the finished goods (an assembly). It is not supposed to be used to create your components. That is the job of your component print(s).
