Bore size in reciprocating compressor

Dear Team,

The following is the query regarding reciprocating compressor. Currently I am working in reciprocating compressor package for a gas treatment plant.

The client specification has the following statement related to cylinder bore diameter.

"Cylinder bore diameter shall not exceed 800mm. Larger diameter bores has to be considered only with the approval."

May I know why do we have such kind limitation provided for cylinder bores and what will be the impact of having larger bore diameter?

It likely has to do with regulatory rules. With a larger bore size there may be a additional rules with regards to safety systems.

It may have something to do with max permissible piston rod loadings, or piston ring to cylinder lining gaps. There may be clues to this requirement in API 618. Your rotating machinery specialist colleagues would also know.

800mm is a pretty large bore. Surely a limitation on rod and crank loads. What's your rod length, diameter and max operating pressure?
