Breaking Wave Links

Hello,

In our company we use NX6/Tc for designing stamping tools.
Because of shorter lead times we have to start designing with a concept product drawing. In the design stage it is very convenient to use associative wave links for cutting contours, because it is easy to modify product drawing changes.
When the product drawing is frozen and the tool design is finished and released, the associative wave links become a pain in the ass.

Is there an easy way to break all wave links in an assembly?

I tend to agree. There are a few ways, one is that you can load to the component as an assembly the part that you wish to link geometry from and then having created the link suppress that component thereby effectively freezing the linked geoemtry from updating temporarily. Another with the use of the advanced wave license would allow you to freeze components within an assembly in a similar fashion. You may on occasion break the links and simply re-establish them later on. You may also get by with simply turning off the automatic update behaviour in the customer defaults or per session.

Breaking a link in modelling is as simple as editing the parameters of the feature and ticking off the associativity. Remaking it requires that you reselect the donor geometry when you again edit the parameters of the feature. In order to do this reliably you need to maintain the assembly relationships between in your case part and mould.

I use the suppression method because I don't really want to loose those relationships anyway. Whatever you do you need to be aware of whether you're using timestamps and how they affect how you maintain your data.

Hello Hudson,

You are right, about losing relationships.
All my parts with wave links are assemblies. See example in the attachment. When I suppress the part where I link from with "suppress component", my assembly is gone, or not?
How can I recall the assembly status so that I can modify my part?

Best regards.

When you suppress components they'll either turn blue in the ANT or disappear entirely. It may necessary to MB3 click in the grey area of the ANT titles and tick ON "Include Suppressed Components". While components are suppressed updates to linked geometry will be suspended, and they will reactivate when the component is simply unsuppressed.

This is a very important topic. I'm wondering if anyone else with a lot of complex machine design experience can weigh in on the proper way to handle WAVE links with production part numbers.

Is the best practice way to either use (a) Assemblies > WAVE Associativity Manager > Edit Frozen Status or (b) suppress the parent part a-la Hudson, in the actual part which is then released and given a drawing? So, if the control geometry changes, you then un-freeze, or un-suppress the master, update the part, then re-freeze, bump the part rev level, and update the drawing (to a new rev level, not necessarily the same as the part rev...)?

I'm told that the suppression method that I use in Native may not work inside Teamcentre, I didn't get to teh bottom of the reasoning why on that one. Sorry.

I can add that Editing the Frozen status seems more like it would be the system design intent, but you do need an extra license that may users don't have.

Beyond that I'd need to let other users comment on what they prefer.

I've your really want to break all wave link to the controlling prt move the parent prt(wave source) in assy to another assembly level

To to it carefully as I described above the best way is to do it individually. If you frequently have issues managing wave links in larger assemblies then you might want to look into the advanced wave licence which allows you to freeze the parts.

Just turning off the automatic updating behaviour per session or using your customer defaults generally suppresses a lot of the updating as well.
