Does anybody know good books for a design engineer with regards to proper design of casting parts. Specifically looking for guidance on die cast part design. For example, what draft angle is need on external and internal surface of part, proper draft for holes....etc

Thanks

prothan,

Product Design for Manufacture and Assembly, by Boothroyd, Dewhurst and Knight, has a lot of information on casting. I strongly recommend a chat with your intended supplier.

You can’t really go wrong with anything by the American Foundrymans Society. I’d also look into the ASME Metals Handbook volumes, one is specifically casting and forging.

Quite realistically however the details you’re looking for need to be driven by the specific vendor doing the casting.

@CWB1: you meat ASM instead of ASME I assume?
ASM would be my first pick for such subjects as well.

AFS is conducting a 1 day course on " Permanent Mold Thermal Management" on 8th March. Perhaps it might interest you if you are from USA. There are a number of books and publications available on AFS website.

I learned a lot about sand castings, and hence castings of all kinds from the
Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Pamphlet for Foundry Practice.
The badge is now discontinued, as are most of the ones for interesting/dangerous stuff.

Scan available at Scribd; you have to sign up, but it's free:

The badges are going for hundreds of dollars on eBay.
