Can anyone direct me to a resource for basic HVAC system design/construction? I am a Civil Engineer in a project management environment that crosses many disciplines. Something like "HVAC for Dummies" would be great.

Hi AndrewC

A manual that I started with many years ago is: How to Design Heating-Cooling Comfort Systems by Joseph B. Olivieri, P.E., has lots of nice sketches and photos. You can probably get a used copy at Barnes & Noble books on the web.

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Analysis and Design 5th Ed. by
McQuiston, Parker, Spitler
You can find it on the internet where college text books are sold.
Great book!!!!
Used it as text for my Senior level HVAC design book.

Andrew,
Would you be comfortable recommending "Structural Design for Dummies"? Since you said you were in project management I assume you are looking for some understanding of HVAC systems and how they work, so you don't feel quite so over-your-head on a construction site. ASHRAE is the best source for reference books. One easy to read introductory book is " Air-conditioning Systems Design Manual" Published by ASHRAE 212PP $79.00 non member. It has some good "Rules-of-Thumb" for reality checking purposes. But just as with structural design, HVAC design is best left to people with experiance. There are already far too many poorly designed systems around.
