UCS-85 is a specific section of Sect. VIII, Div. 1 that addresses the required heat treatment of test specimens for UCS materials. What is the equivalent of this for UHA materials? For example, if a part will be solution-annealed (additional to SA by the mill) and requires a charpy test, does the coupon also need to be solution-annealed to match the part? It seems like it would make sense for the coupon to get the same heat treat, but I don't recall seeing this addressed anywhere in Sect VIII.

QANo1, presumably required per UHA-51(a)(1).

Edit: For Charpies only, not tensiles, etc.

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

UCS-85 ties back directly to UG-85 in ASME Section VIII, Div 1, which refers to heat treatment performed by the Manufacturer during processing rather than by the mill. UG-85 requires specimens, like tensile and, if applicable, Charpy, that would be required under the original material specification.

If you notice, there is no reference to UHA in UG-85, only UCS-85, UHT-5(e) and UHT-81 because typically UHA materials do not harden by heat treatment and a solution anneal performed sets the UHA material back to the condition supplied by the material specification.

metengr, is my understanding of UHA-51(a)(1) correct? If, for example, a part were subject to solution anneal after forming and required impacts, then the Charpy specimens would need the additional solution anneal as well?

Thanks,

Mike

SnTMan;
Your understanding is correct because it applies to thermal treatment (as defined in footnote 82) and the effect on notch toughness only. However, my point above was specific reference to UG-85, where tensile and Charpy, if applicable, specimens must be heat treated to ensure compliance to the original material specification, where the final heat treatment is performed by the Manufacturer, which was the original poster's question. As you correctly stated, the reference to UHA-51 (a)only pertains to impact testing to ensure adequate toughness at MDMT.

Thanks SnTMan & metengr. I agree with what was said regarding UHA-51(a)(1). Charpy was just my example. I was also wondering about tensile tests, too, but you have also answered that.

metengr, yes I was aware of the UG-85 references and UCS-85 rules, but this was a question I had not considered before. Thanks for the confirmation, and to the OP as well for the new wrinkle :)

Regards,

Mike
