There are times where a VFD seems appropriate but I then encountered a Cycle Stop Valve on a system not functioning correctly. Has anyone had experience with using these to maintain constant pressure with varying demands on an irrigation system? I thought it was just to stop hammering, but the manufacturer states it does much more, and this seems true, I am not sure of their reliability though.

I was just at a complex domestic filtering setup. $20M++ house that had a shlocked-up filter system being fed from surface water. Owners don't like to smell chlorine so they just switched off the chlorinator..

Good luck there. :)

I looking at GE synchronous motors starting at 1200 HP.

Oh, they are *available*, but unless you have a real need for one you would not normally *buy* one. They have too many negatives in small sizes: auxiliary gear such as the excitation system needs maintenance; not as robust as a squirrel cage machine; more complex control and protection scheme; and so on. Once you get into the low MW area and up the economic case starts to shift because they are more efficient than an induction machine, they can run at unity power factor, and /or they are big enough that you can use them to compensate power factor for the whole plant.
