I'm designing a deck with the following specs:

Height: > 30" above ground

Material: Western Red Cedar (No. 2)
Fb = 575 psi
Fv = 65 psi
Fc (perp) = 350 psi
Fc (parallel) = 825 psi
E = 1.1E6 psi

Joist size: 2x6

I need to come up with a detail for the deck-railing post connection that meets the load requirement in the IRC (R301.5) of 200 lbs.

I have looked at using a Simpson Strong-Tie HD2AHDG deck post connector, however this requires a 2x8 joist size. I also looked at using a DeckLok bracket system. I didn’t see anything on their website ( regarding joist size requirement (or type of wood).

Does anyone have any experience with the DeckLok brackets, or do you have any suggestions for a detail I could use for the post connection that will meet the code requirement?

kslee1000...I agree and my apologies for misstating the code requirement. It is:

A 200 lb. concentrated load applied at any point and in any direction, or

A 50 lb/ft distributed load applied in any direction.

They are not to be applied simultaneously, of course.
 
If the posts are spaced at 4' centers, 50 plf on the rail amounts to 200# at the top of each post. If it is applied in any direction, it must be applied inward as well as outward. In my opinion, that is not a reasonable requirement, but if it is, the connection shown in the link by CTW requires another holddown on the bottom of the joist.

The article posted by CTW certainly shows how to handle the situation where the post is on the end of a joist, but the researchers have ignored the case where the post is on the end of the deck.

I think it is a good design that the post would not fail outward, but inward - a stop sign yells "don't come close !!!". [nosmiley]
 
Not very rigid at all. I think you would have to have blocking between the joists of the same depth as the joist. Then use the connectors in the article posted by CTW from the post to the blocking. Your detail puts all the moment into the deck.
 
Concur with the mandatory blocking - The edge beams must be connected back to the "main" joist, unless they are in the areas where the original poster said they could attach to the (under deck) verticals.
