I remember their being "another" method to determine the preconsolidaton pressure, other than Casagrande's emprical construction method. Either this method is commonly used in Brazil or the person who developed the method is Brazillian. ANyways, this method doesn't rely on picking the point of maximum curvature by eye, its more mathematically based. I think the method is called the Pashako Silva(??) method.

Just wondering if anybody can describe the methodology or give a reference to a paper where it can be found.

Thanks

A second method of determining the pre-consolidation pressure that comes to mind involves the use of the electric cone (CPT) and Schmertman's method. Basically this method looks at the Su/effective overburden stress of the soil and compares it a similar ratio for a normally consolidated soil.
Doing a internet search on Schmertmann and/or CPT on the net should get you started. In addition, I know Matt Kokan wrote a in depth article for the Vancouver Geotech society a few years ago on this subject.

Best of luck

The swelling potential of sample in the oedometer and the load required to carry out subsequent stress loading does accurately give you the preconsolidation pressure. Its a very reliable method for over consolidated soils.

A non-mathematical method and possibly a non-proven method is to obtain it using another graphical approach. But, this requires the computation of Cv vs. effective stress which should plot as a "V"; the bottom of the V is approximately the pre-consolidation pressure.

- Tavenas

Métodos de determinación gráfica: -Schmermann
-Butterfield
-Old
