A year and a half ago sections of the railing on the Golden Gate Bridge we're replaced with units fabricated out of flat bar. They inadvertently built the world's largest harmonica.

Now for the proposed fix?

1/16th aluminum attached to steel and exposed to salt spray? I hope they don't consider the fix permanent else this may become another engineering disaster.

Nah, it's all in the marketing... some group will come up with a series of ports along the railing to make good use of the galvanic differential. Maybe they can let people charge their iPhones. The GG bridge may become known as the iBridge.

It says it has "rubber dampening materials" so, ignoring the probable misuse of the word dampening, there is may be a break between the dissimilar metals. At least I hope so...

...and in whose opinion?

I am reminded of scurrying cockroaches trying to get out of the light.

Don't know why. Just came over me.

A rubber material of some sort between the clips and the slats would make sense.

I still find it utter stupidity that they did testing and found that the sound would happen yet built the railings anyways. Whoever decided how much the testing sound level would scale up completely failed guessing the full size sound level. Or did the group planning this actually think making the bridge sing was a good idea?

Maybe they could just make the railing adjustable so that it can play a different tune every day.

Salt spray? How high does oceanic salt spray get? Or is it de-icing salt?

My glass has a v/c ratio of 0.5

Maybe the tyranny of Murphy is the penalty for hubris. -

It seems this problem should have been identified early during installation and a fix should have been devised before the whole thing ended up costing $450K to retrofit.

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Just have it play "Be sure to wear flowers in your hair" and the majority will surely go for it.

At deck height it is less 'salt spray' and more 'salt fog'.
The fog will transport a lot of salt, and can range quite a ways inland.

I'd like to teach a bridge to sing
In perfect harmony
In lovely painted orange tones it'll
dissolve galvanic'ly

...a big BPS for the lyrics.[pipe]

I still have difficulty with International Orange, not interfering with aesthetics.

I'm guessing the red color wasn't available in powder coat. We've all seen how aluminum corrodes under powder coat.

It won't be an aesthetics problem since that's the color of the bridge.

A:
The Golden Gate Bridge has always been painted orange vermilion, deemed "International Orange." Rejecting carbon black and steel gray, Consulting Architect Irving Morrow selected the distinctive orange color because it blends well with the span's natural setting as it is a warm color consistent with the warm colors of the land masses in the setting as distinct from the cool colors of the sky and sea. It also provides enhanced visibility for passing ships. If the U.S. Navy had its way, the Bridge might have been painted black and yellow stripes to assure even greater visibility for passing ships.
