That other thread got me thinking. Perhaps global warming is happening due to heat being released into our atmosphere and is not primarily driven GHG emissions.

This is bad news for nuclear because so little of it's energy produced becomes useful power. Remember that all energy, no matter it's source, eventually becomes heat.

Perhaps the solution to global warming is space lasers 😉. Energy cannons that can radiate heat off into space.

Droughts, floods, and forest fires are all part of the process. Australian poet Dorothea Mackellar wrote in 1908 about "drought and flooding rain". The rains bring growth in the underbrush, the droughts turn the underbrush to tinder, and humans and lightning cause fires. Rinse, repeat... Many Australian forest species are rejuvenated by fire opening the seeds. Fires are not managed by European settlers as well as they were by the Aboriginal people.

For the last few years, people started to discuss this and most agreed that some fire was good. As a result, California (Newsom) doubled down and said we are going to extinguish every fire that starts, even in very remote regions.

Something to note, forest fires put a tremendous amount of moisture in the air.

The problem with controlled burns in forests is that NIMBY tree changers like me hate them, so they are not done often enough. They wreck the grapes. They smell bad. We can't walk into the forest when it is being burned.

But they need to happen. Millennial style foot stomping does not get around the unpleasant fact, fuel loads have to be reduced on a regular basis unless you want the occasional wipeout.

Cheers

“forest fires put a tremendous amount of moisture in the air”

That moisture forms clouds, which produce rain, which douses fire.

The problem is therefore self limiting!

Next question!

"If you don't have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to find time to repair it?"

I said nothing like that, brim. I was trying to open a path for discussion. The combustion of hydrocarbon fuels generates roughly an equal weight in water. This is pumped into the atmosphere where later it may come down as precipitation. More moisture means less drought, no?

wow, I’ve got nothing for that

"If you don't have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to find time to repair it?"

"NIMBY tree changers like me" ... not sure what a "tree changer" is ?

"Millennial style foot stomping" ... greg, are you calling yourself a "millennial" ('cause you've adopted one of their behaviours ?

(smile !?)

In conclusion, Newsom caused the recurring fire problem in California. And, we can only assume, B.C., Portugal, and Siberia.

We need to give Gavin a rake and put him to work clearing forest litter.

who's to say that these other countries didn't cut costs the same way ?

who's to say that all fires are due to the same cause ??

who's to say that that cause is (or isn't) related to climate change ?

and before you reply about my "facts" ... these are "opinions" (as should be obvious).

Brim, don't misrepresent my words. I said Newsom enacted policy that will make the problem worse.

And yes, if we're not going to burn our forests then we're going to need to rake them.

So many engineers are missing the gene for sarcasm detection. That doesn’t align well with my strong compulsion to generate it.

From now on I’ll flag it for their benefit.

"If you don't have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to find time to repair it?"

It's hard to believe you're being sarcastic when you also push this as an existential threat.

It’s partly a defence mechanism against irrationality and absurdity.

"If you don't have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to find time to repair it?"

Brim, talk to Greg (Locock) and myself about sarcastic responses. I've found I have to tone the sarcasm meter down significantly. I don't like using emojis (I'm not 12, although mentally I could be regressing) but I will add a "(smile)" to show I'm not meaning to be offensive.

A Sea Changer is someone who moves to a cute little seaside town from the big smoke, named after a banal Australian TV show (tautology alert). A tree changer is the same idea but for people who go bush, like me.

A couple of decades ago this led to a lot of houses being built on the corners of paddocks of old farms (mine is 10 acres on the edge of a state forest), the zoning laws were changed so you could not build on less than 100 acres. That's one reason why recent bush fires are so destructive economically - lots of people living in houses in clearings in the forest, whereas in the past the few houses were built on ridges or paddocks clearfelled of trees.

I already self monitor all day long when in an office, which can get strenuous but it has to come out ;)

Weather - climate all controlled by high and low pressure areas, winds etc. Remember LBJ's speech?
