We got asked to weld using ER16-8-2 for 310 SS for vessel work.

We have a standard P8 to P8 procedure. The procedure has the standard AWS D1.6 table showing basic rods under P8 we can use for different recommended base materials. The QA said he believes we cannot use this procedure for ER16-8-2 for 310 base materials. But the material is P8, the rod classification is non-essential, so we are not sure why the QA has rejected this?

Who asked you? Your customer?

so we are not sure why the QA has rejected this

Have you asked him? If it were me, I’d ask him chapter and verse of the code.

The devil is in the details; she also wears prada.

Are these welds going to see elevated temperature service?
The 16-8-2 would have very different high temp properties compared to 310.

Yes, high temp service is correct. Also yes this is for the client. I believe they should accept.

Why "Should they accept"?
As far as high temp strength and creep this material is inferior to the 310.

The client has asked us to use that Rod, but I will ask that question. Thank you for the feedback.
