Does anyone have any specific knowledge of where ASME B31.3 addresses the alignment of the weld seam on Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipe? Our construction folks seem to want to align the weld seam from pipe section to pipe section at a butt weld.

I don't think its mentioned in the code outside of 328.3.4, so, if you want a typical 30º offset, that should have been specified in the Piping Construction Spec. (or the Weld Procedure). That is where I've seen it.

"Pumping accounts for 20% of the world’s energy used by electric motors and 25-50% of the total electrical energy usage in certain industrial facilities."-DOE statistic (Note: Make that 99% for pipeline companies)

Thanks. I'll check it out. Our specification does have the 30 degree offset on the pipe's principal axis. I am trying to find a reason to even have separation. Since this varies by area, the stress load is not generally known until the files are examined; therefore, general default rules apply.
