I'd like to make a simple column chart in Excel with multiple data series. However, I don't want the series to plot next to each other which is the Excel default; I'd like to plot the series grouped together. The easiest way to explain is with a simple example of temperature data. Say you want to plot the temperature on the 1st, 10th, and 20th of each monnth for several months, color coding each month, ie 3 green columns for January, then 3 blue columns for February, etc. How to do this?

I came up with an awkward workaround by including blanks for each series, which adds some goofy spaces between the columns (see attached example). There's got to be an easier way.

Thanks

Probably the easiest way is by customizing your data points. If you left click on a data point and it's the only thing selected, right click and select Format data point.

Using your data, I put everything in one chart as 1 series. For the b data, I formatted the individual data points separately changing the fill from Automatic to Solid Fill and selecting the Dark Red. I repeated the procedure for each of the other data series (C, D and E) selecting different colors (e.g., light blue, light green and purple).

That is simple. Nice and easy. Thanks
