Extruding Dies with Coating - HELP

I am currently extruding a steel end fitting on to a wire for my assembly. The steel end fitting is currently coated with a phosphate & wax for corrosion resisitance. The phosphate & wax coating does not meet the corrosion requirments, so I need to look for an alternative. However, in the past when using any zinc plaitng and then extruding the steel end fittings the zinc plating would scrape off or gum up the dies.

I am looking for any recomondations on the exturing procees with platings/coating for corrosion protection. I can not use a secondary process to plate/coat as the steel end fittings are extruded during the complete assembly on the manufacturing line.

I am open to any suggestions on plating/coating and the extruding process.

By 'extruding' do you mean you pull the fitting and the wire through a hole in a solid die to reduce the diameter of the steel and shrink it onto the wire?

Or do you mean 'swaging', where a segmented die is pushed radially onto the steel to reduce its diameter... ? If not, you might consider it.

I mean extruding the steel end fitting (reducing its size) in a solid die onto the wire. The end fittings are loaded in a cartridge on the extruding die. You insert the wire into the extruder that has a end fitting in place and it exturdes the piece on. I hope this clears it up.

Are you 100% sure that the phos and wax is for corrosion and not for drawing lubricity? Because that is normally what it's used for. Once on, it can't be easily wiped off. A hot soap wash should get it off.

The corrosion section of this forum should be able to answer the other part.

Is the tooling itself coated? This technology has moved on a lot in the last few years and you may be able to go back to using zinc coated sheet.

We use these a lot it may be worth getting the rep in.

There is a link to worldwide suppliers it is not just a UK company.
