Here is Dr. Patrick Moore's description of his unique thesis as presented in Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom. "It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs. Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists - all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject - to tell them the truth. This is my effort, after 50 years as a scientist and environmental activist, to expose the misinformation and outright lies used to scare us and our children about the future of the Earth. Direct observation is the very basis of science. Without verified observation it is not possible to know the truth. That is the sharp focus of this book." The book contains 98 color photographs, illustrations, and charts. A key target audience is parents who do not approve of the "progressive" school curriculum and its alarmism about the future of civilization and the natural world. Dr. Moore hopes these parents will read his book and pass it on to their high-school and older children to give them an alternative to the bleak future predicted by the merchants of doom. Many other audiences will also find the book informative and convincing. In 11 chapters the reader is clearly shown that citizens are being misinformed by so many environmental doomsday prophesies, ones they cannot verify for themselves. We are told that nuclear energy is very dangerous when the numbers prove it is one of the safest technologies. We are told polar bears will go extinct soon when their population has been growing steadily for nearly 50 years. We are told that there is something harmful in genetically modified food crops when it is invisible, has no name and no chemical formula. We are told severe forest fires are caused by climate change when they are actually caused by poor management of fuel load (dead wood) in the forest. We are told that all the coral reefs will die by 2100 when in fact the most diverse coral reefs are found in the warmest oceans in the world. And of course, we are told that invisible CO2 from using fossil fuels, accounting for more than 80 percent of our energy supply, will make the Earth too hot for life. All of these scare stories, and many more, are simply not true. And this book will convince you, your family, and your colleagues of that. There is no substitute for the truth. Dr. Patrick Moore was one of the co-founders of Greenpeace and sailed on the first Greenpeace campaign against US H-bomb tests in Alaska. Upon receiving his PhD in ecology, he spent 15 years in the top committee of Greenpeace and led many of its environmental campaigns. Greenpeace began as a group of volunteers with noble intentions. Over the years it became very successful with campaigns to save the whales, stop the mass slaughter of baby seals, prevent toxic dumping into the air, water and earth, and many more. Greenpeace found itself in the early 1980s with more than $100 million coming in annually and close to 1,000 people on the payroll. It had become a business and fundraising moved to the top of the priority list. New campaigns were more about using sensationalism, misinformation and fear to attract donations. Dr. Moore said good-bye in 1986 as Greenpeace was turning into a racket peddling junk science. Since then he has strived to be a sensible environmentalist, basing his beliefs on sound science and logical thinking. This book is the culmination of 50 years of learning during Dr. Moore's multi-faceted quest for the truth about environmental issues (an historical account of Dr. Moore's 15 years with Greenpeace and his analysis of environmental subjects are in his previous book, "Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout - The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist, also on Amazon).

Bear in mind that the so-called "fake" crisis with coral dieoff and bleaching is both real and continuing to happen

Previous science blamed coral bleaching on excessively calm water. The high clarity allows for more UV penetration which causes coral bleaching.

Locally, in the Sacramento river delta, dyes have been used to reduce the amount of algae growth by reducing sunlight penetration. Perhaps we need to do something similar for the coral?

Ironically, sun screen has been blamed for coral bleaching.

Don't forget, The Tyee blamed Russia for the trucker convoy...

And NPR tried to hide the Hunter Biden laptop story. These are not reliable/credible sources.

Re coral bleaching, yes we are in the tail end of the biggest La Nina we've had in 30 years, and the effect of the El Nino/La Nina on the GBR is well known. The fact that your scary article fails to mention El Nino/La Nina or PDO shows it is just scare mongering. Long story short, the jelly like blobs that make up the color in corals are temperature sensitive. When the water temperature changes as El Nino/La Nina pump cold or warm water down the coastline, they die, and are then progressively replaced by higher or lower temperature loving corals. The best reefs aren't in GBR, they are in Indonesia, where the water is warmer. High temperatures are a problem for cold water corals, but warming the water will encourage the high temperature ones. The cold water ones will move south.

Cheers

When science is open for debate then it is science. When science is "settled" (like global warming and climate change is) and closed for debate then it is controlled "agenda" science.
Imagine if the science on the elements was closed for debate, in years past! The elements would still be earth, air, water, fire and aether. And the heck with the periodic table.

Climate change and/or global warming is open to debate and new information is being added... not a closed issue at all. It just seems to get uglier.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?

Care to expand on the connection between science and agenda? Appreciate it since I am hopelessly uninformed on agendas.

Climate change science is far from settled, otherwise there's be some workable solutions which couldn't be improved upon.

It's in a state of flux with new data being added all the time. The system is so complex, it's almost impossible to model with any precision. It's like the weather reports of yesteryear. They are getting better, but no cigar, yet. [pipe]

In 2000 the creek out back flooded and my vegetable garden was destroyed. Oh well, it was a 1000 year event and I can replant next year.
In 2010 the creek out back flooded again and my chicken coop was damaged; I lost some birds. They're saying this is now a 100 year event, but that's a risk I can live with.
In 2020 the creek out back flooded again and my basement was submerged, what a mess. But insurance covered the loss. They are now saying this is 10 year event and that I should move soon to higher ground, so I'm slightly concerned but not enough to move yet.

Dang scientists keep changing their minds, and anyway they're paid by the government, so how can anyone trust them not to have an agenda? And what can this possibly have to do with CO2 being a greenhouse gas anyway?

I'll wait till the science is settled before moving uphill.

If you had a material that continually dropped its yield strength, would you stick with the "historical" value? You're example is not a good counterexample; if you get 3 floods in 20 years, why would you insist that it's still a 1000-yr flood? Run a Weibull analysis and see what you get; bet it's not a 1000-yr event.

I'm trying to wrap my head around your story. In up to 40 years of history on your property you have experienced regular flooding every 10 years. The experts have advised you to move to higher ground. They're probably charging extra money for flood insurance to encourage said move. Instead, you want the entire world to change it's behavior so there will be a slim chance someone several generations from now won't have to experience the same flooding?

Sorry I missed the point. I thought he was just giving an example of how things were deteriorating. [ponder] ...and the dang scientists changing their minds was for humour.

I enjoyed your story, which (correct me if I'm wrong) was meant to describe the current behavior of the population.

In your story, the experience is certainly convincing and obvious enough for you to want to switch your behavior... even if the government wasn't telling you to do so.

The problem is that the danger from global warming is much more insidious and less visible than in your story. Climate is so variable, that It takes decades for us to notice any changes, much less confirm that those changes line up with our predictions.

In the real world, we've got a lot of rich, influential and elitist people who do NOT put their money where their mouths are. Folks like Leonardo Dicaprio, Al Gore, John Kerry, Bill Gates and many others. But, if you look at their lives, they're still buying beach front properties, they're still living extravagant lifestyles, flying on private jets and such.

When the general public sees this it frustrates them. Everything those elitists say falls on deaf ears. "So, you want to force ME to dramatically alter my lifestyle which is so meager in comparison with yours, but you don't think that the new rules you want to impose should affect YOU. That's hypocrisy".

There are other lesser known people (Ed Begley Jr, Greta Thundberg, etc) who do a better job of walking the walk. But, even most of the most "pious" environmentalists that I know seem to be 100% opposed to nuclear power for some reason. They believe mankind will be destroyed by AGW in 20 years, but still think Nuclear is too "dangerous".

No need to... it's interesting and informative.

Just because they are 'real' 1000 year return period storms doesn't mean that you cannot have them 'back to back'... it's just unlikley. I should have added that they, in future, may become your 10 year return period storms.

Josh,

The environmental elites are not buying up beach front property that would be submerged in a few years if their fears are well founded. This has been debunked many times.

And, one person who stops taking private plane flights and cruising on yachts would have no measurable effect on the pace of global warming. You could argue that the changes made by the likes of Greta Thundberg are just window dressing. But, I believe she is sincere in her beliefs and willing to sacrifice to demonstrate that.

We have already demonstrated that voluntary changes by a few committed individuals cannot solve this problem. We need systemic change that applies to all of us. And, the proposed changes would apply to the so-called elites just the same as they would apply to you. No one has proposed changes that would exempt them.

As far as nuclear power, I agree that this must be part of the solution. The fears of nuclear power are generally overblown and largely irrational.

Naysayers can and will continually argue that's it's just coincidence that we've had, 3, 5, 20 1000-yr events in a short amount of time, but eventually, they're going to have to admit that it's no longer a valid statistic, just like there's been much less noise about global warming itself, regardless of cause, being fake news. Now, they can only argue that "it's a happened before," or "it's happened this quickly before."
