Here is Dr. Patrick Moore's description of his unique thesis as presented in Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom. "It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs. Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists - all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject - to tell them the truth. This is my effort, after 50 years as a scientist and environmental activist, to expose the misinformation and outright lies used to scare us and our children about the future of the Earth. Direct observation is the very basis of science. Without verified observation it is not possible to know the truth. That is the sharp focus of this book." The book contains 98 color photographs, illustrations, and charts. A key target audience is parents who do not approve of the "progressive" school curriculum and its alarmism about the future of civilization and the natural world. Dr. Moore hopes these parents will read his book and pass it on to their high-school and older children to give them an alternative to the bleak future predicted by the merchants of doom. Many other audiences will also find the book informative and convincing. In 11 chapters the reader is clearly shown that citizens are being misinformed by so many environmental doomsday prophesies, ones they cannot verify for themselves. We are told that nuclear energy is very dangerous when the numbers prove it is one of the safest technologies. We are told polar bears will go extinct soon when their population has been growing steadily for nearly 50 years. We are told that there is something harmful in genetically modified food crops when it is invisible, has no name and no chemical formula. We are told severe forest fires are caused by climate change when they are actually caused by poor management of fuel load (dead wood) in the forest. We are told that all the coral reefs will die by 2100 when in fact the most diverse coral reefs are found in the warmest oceans in the world. And of course, we are told that invisible CO2 from using fossil fuels, accounting for more than 80 percent of our energy supply, will make the Earth too hot for life. All of these scare stories, and many more, are simply not true. And this book will convince you, your family, and your colleagues of that. There is no substitute for the truth. Dr. Patrick Moore was one of the co-founders of Greenpeace and sailed on the first Greenpeace campaign against US H-bomb tests in Alaska. Upon receiving his PhD in ecology, he spent 15 years in the top committee of Greenpeace and led many of its environmental campaigns. Greenpeace began as a group of volunteers with noble intentions. Over the years it became very successful with campaigns to save the whales, stop the mass slaughter of baby seals, prevent toxic dumping into the air, water and earth, and many more. Greenpeace found itself in the early 1980s with more than $100 million coming in annually and close to 1,000 people on the payroll. It had become a business and fundraising moved to the top of the priority list. New campaigns were more about using sensationalism, misinformation and fear to attract donations. Dr. Moore said good-bye in 1986 as Greenpeace was turning into a racket peddling junk science. Since then he has strived to be a sensible environmentalist, basing his beliefs on sound science and logical thinking. This book is the culmination of 50 years of learning during Dr. Moore's multi-faceted quest for the truth about environmental issues (an historical account of Dr. Moore's 15 years with Greenpeace and his analysis of environmental subjects are in his previous book, "Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout - The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist, also on Amazon).

That would create an immediate reduction in plastic pollution, GHG emissions, and oil consumption.

Oil and gas are used to make plastics, so I don't follow the logic. 'Just say no' to making plastic.

Not sure how to gather up microplastics for burning, including the ones in all of our bodies.

Most plastics "can" burn cleanly. All of the common types, PE, PP, PET, ABS, PA are compounds of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. All of these can be combusted safely and cleanly when compared to oil.

There are common plastics that are more problematic much as PVC and PTFE. Their halogen component forms acid gasses during combustion. Then again, so do oil and coal because they contain sulfur. Halogen gasses are a lot more dangerous but the same exhaust scrubber technology that works for sulfur can be applied.

The GHG savings doesn't come from the combustion of plastic directly, the savings comes from not rounding up and transporting or plastics to China where many end up in waterways and drain in to the ocean. What does end up in recycling facilities is somewhat energy intense to process as well.

Even if we reduce plastic waste, we still have to deal with what we have already produced. As plastics break down they eventually degrade from polymers to monomers but the only way to truly return plastics to their natural origins is to combust them in to water and CO2 which can then return to the natural cycle through photosynthesis.

Combustion of plastic for energy turns it in to a resource instead of a waste product. Hopefully this will discourage plastics from being dumped. We're stuck with the microplastic we have but we can certainly reduce the rate of it in the future.

This parallels the nuclear problem. It's a working solution (not perfect) but there is too much irrationality around climate change to support good decisions.

Read my post again, and think 'entropy'.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts."

"Just say no" to making plastic isn't going to happen. So, how best do we live with plastics?

And what about entropy?

I think there are going to be some drastic changes coming up... and a great reduction in the use of plastics.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?

We can't live with plastics! And we will not physiologically evolve to do so any epoch soon.
What part of 'poisoning ourselves and the environment' is ambiguous or unclear?

Pollution is one of the purest manifestations of entropy (if I can invoke the word 'pure'). Entropy is not just for steam!

You'd think they were going to act on this faster... you know, like it's important.[ponder]

If you are only concerned about the next two generations, you can ask one of them. Explain that they won't be flying for holidays, and that they won't have more than one electronic device each, and that their spare time will be spent growing vegetables. I suggest you buy (plastic) ear muffs. The fact is YOUR first world lifestyle (and contribution to the future population) is the major driver for these changes, so if they bother you then it is up to YOU to fix YOUR lifestyle. Anything else is just blah blah blah, as Greta said (the best thing she ever did).

Suggest you look up the meaning and implications of Determinism.

Colloquially, you are basically blaming the individual victim and telling him/her that they are responsible for slowing down this freight train that is speeding toward a cliff (that's a metaphor).

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts."

That's a good analogy. Someone had to lay the tracks towards the cliff. An invented crisis if you catch my drift.

If we could only bottle all the vim, vigor, and passion that people have for this, then we would be able to solve the energy "crisis", and probably world peace too.

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

So its up to other people to solve the problem you think you have that you are part of? How convenient. Oh well when you find them let them know that they have your full support so long as it doesn't involve any action on your part.

Cheers

I am for reducing plastic. We did without much of it in years past. Plastic was a rare sight on cars and trucks, and should be now as well. There where very few plastic toys, toy trucks and cars were all metal, most dolls and such were porcelain. Lawn mowers and chain saws were all metal, as well as hand power tools like drills and skill saws. Even the simple things like food containers and motor oil containers, not too many years ago they where either metal, glass or cardboard. There is just too much use of plastic in items that would be much better quality if they where made of metal.

As far as how the weather/ climate is now, it was known for many years in this age we are in now there would be some rare planetary alignments happening, and it was known that the weather in this NOW time would be off the record books. Then there was President Johnson's speech years ago that was enlightening. There is so much more to the climate issue that is not well known.

Point miss, GL

I hate to inform you, but it's not invented and it's likely going to get a lot worse...

Scientists are talking about terraforming Mars yet we know nothing of the trajectory or management of our own climate?

As a conservationist, this guy rings the right bells.

He explains well the different types of forests in Europe and prehistoric climate change from a lumberjack's perspective (may not be this specific video).
