Good beginner's HVAC book?

The subject header says it all. I'm a draftsman working at a Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing engineering firm. I've been doing electrical drafting and light design since I started earlier this year. I was recently told that they'd like me to learn Mechanical/HVAC. (Of course, they don't expect me to learn this on my own. There are several other designers and engineers that will help me as I go along.)

We mainly do commercial buildings, and sometimes houses. I'm just looking for a general, beginner's HVAC book. Any suggestions?

I took a course in college and found the text book, “Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Analysis and Design,” by McQuiston & Parker to be a good starting point. The book covers the fundamentals.

I am a chip of the old block. I would recommend Carrier System Design Manual.

Or, if you are not a Carrier guy, the Trane Air Conditioning manual is a good basics book.

If you do nothing else at least ask a co-worker who may be members of ASHRAE to sponsor you to become a Student or an Associate Member of ASHRAE. Each year you will receive a book relating to HVAC. These books are coveted. NO one gives them up, well some do! But if your company will pay your membership dues (and many do) your in. The cost is about US$110.00 per year. If your are worth your metal it will be worth it for your company to pop for the annual fee.
Also once you become a member never, ever give it up.

My personal favorite is Faber & Kell's Heating and Air Conditioning of Buildings. You can buy it at Walmart for $120 (ouch!).
