Hi. We have a pump with up to 100 metres head of suction and up to 200 metrs head of discharge. Delivery pipe is approx 200mm dia. We are trying to fit a heat exchanger to the control cubicle using the water in the pump lines but the exchanger is only rated for 10 bar. Does anyone know of a way this can be acheived without sending the water to waste. Regards Alan

Could a controlled slip stream floating on the pump lowest suction pressure be applied ? Please comment.

If I understood your query, since 100 m head is equivalent to 10 bar, I thought that taking a slip stream from the pump discharge under pressure control with a solenoid valve protection (and a RV) discharging into the lowest suction head point may be OK. Is it workable ?
 
First of all I will check what is the pressure at the point of installation of the Heat Exchanger(if the pump discharge gauge shows 200M head or 20Bar approx. it will reduce due to friction as you move along the pipeline).

Secondly, if it is possible to install the HE somewhere in the middle of the suction pipeline.

My third option would be as suggested by 25362.

Believe it or not : Though human body is made up of intricate and subtle mechanism, it is very poor in energy conversion. The maximum efficiency is 20% during cycling. During under water swimming it is just 4%.
 
The unit is to cool a control cubicle holding the VFD that powers the pump. With a 200 mm dia discharge pipe the pressure drop is minimal. We thought of putting the unit on the suction side only but there would not be enough differential of pressure to flow the water. Thanks for the help. Alan
