Housing Projects 4

Is anyone aware of any housing projects, constructed using lumber building materials and local finishes that are used for large numbers of small single family housing units? These are likely to produce accommodations for housing in fairly developed Western type countries. They may be in Europe, the UK, or wherever but essentially are a low costing accommodation for families to live in. I've been asked if I know of any projects like this and am unaware of any. Can someone point me in a direction? Thanks...

Are we talking mid/high rise type buildings or other high density applications? If so, I can't help you. But if you're talking more medium density - townhomes up to small apartment buildings and apartment complexes consisting of several 4-8 unit buildings, it's not uncommon here on the East Coast. I was involved in one a few years ago. They are starting to move away from them and trying to push more of a mixed income model, but we still have several "projects" from decades past. Mostly built with stud walls and brick veneer.

Small single family units that could be used for low cost housing, and simple enough to construct that local tradespeople could construct and/or assemble.

Not really low cost housing, but in Norway a high percentage of houses are pre-designed.

Usually different contractors collaborate with different house design firms in each region.
The design firm provides all drawings, and probably have deals with suppliers for materials and parts used in their houses.

Some of the house models are consctructed in the hundreds.

I've done a few with an architect, we designed what would be deemed a little house at 12ft wide and about 30-ish feet long, a studio of sort space with a loft on one end and a private room. these were designed for veterans and a small veteran family. they are pretty simple to build and have numerous "overly thought-out" geometry to keep framing easy and not waste materials.

You can definitely find similar projects or resources, but depending on your clients needs it may have already been designed. which may be good for you since you don't care for residential!

Something else for the Home Building file. Precast basement walls. Again, not really in your neck of the woods but t looks promising. One builder has slashed his start to completion times from 120 days to 75 during the summer & 90 days in the winter.

How 'bout shipping containers? They seem to be gaining popularity and are somewhat already "pre-engineered" for modest residential abodes.

thanks motor... that's one of the things they are looking into. They also have some pretty fancy container structures. A few years back I was involved in a project to use them as a 'blast resistant' office structure for a chemical processing plant in Manitoba.

Modular housing is becoming very common in the UK and Ireland. All services, electrics, plumbing etc in installed and just connected on site.
