Hey

The last year I've been doing a lot of hobby programming, as I really enjoy solving problems by writing code. My wish is to implement some programming in my daily work as an engineer. To get some perspective and inspiration I wanted to ask here what type of challenges you use programming to solve in your work, especially structural engineering problems and what type of language you prefer for these problems.

What might end up happening is a mishmash of code that only works for certain situations, that only one person in the office understands.
This is an accurate description of most spreadsheets used at a job. Not sure what my point is. Just an observation.

I think if you're excited about writing software, then you should. I wouldn't necessarily assume that anybody else will use what you create.

One of the great side-effects of writing software (whether it be a spreadsheet or something more advanced), is that you'll definitely gain a better understanding of structural engineering along the way. It's impossible to write a program to do something if you don't have a solid fundamental understanding of how that thing works. Really, the coding is often the easy part.
