HVAC 0-10V signal wiring help

Hi all,
I have a few questions about wiring HVAC controls that I hope you guys can help with. How far can you run a 0-10V signal? what type of cabling and where to run it (ie not near power yeah?). Any traps that you know about, or any good book on controls and signals?
