Hello,

I have found a flying wing uav with incredible flight characteristics for my experience.

7Kg for a 1400mm and 160km range (inspector 301)
3.2kg for 1320mm (deserthawk)

I used to fly RC airplanes and it is dificult to imagine to load with 7kg such small aircraft!

My question is this:

How can i start to calculate some basic flight characteristics for a flying wing?

- cruise speed vs airplane weight
- drag and vs airplane weight

in order to be able to calculate motor power, propeller, flight time...

Are there any simple software or excel sheet?

Thanks
Jose Luis

The Inspector 301 has a near-delta planform and a lifting body fuselage. I estimate that its wing area is about 0.9m^2, giving a wing loading of about 76 Pa or 1.6 lb/ft^2.

The Desert Hawk has a near-rectangular planform, with an area of 0.325m^2, giving a wing loading of about 97 N/m^2 or 2.0 lb/ft^2.

Both have high wing loadings, therefore high stall speeds, compared to regular model aircraft. The Inspector 301 requires a catapault to launch it, whereas the Desert Hawk is hand-launched. The Inspector 301 is not as remarkable as you seem to think.

This site discusses the design of model aircraft; the link is to a calculator for wing loading and stall speed.

includes a file that calculates the performance of single propeller aircraft using analysis developed by NACA in the 20s and 30s. It runs on Smath, also available from that site, a free engineering calculation package.

Hi jlcortex,

You can use the XFLR5 software to determinate some basic flight caracteristics for a flying wing but if you want to do some more serious you have to keep in mind much more aerodynamics details if you want to make a controlled flight for your uav.

See you
