The fibre optic cable has been crush damaged in a small area, so loss of output power at the laser head. Is it possible to repair this cable on site, as the laser manufacturer will only repair it if we return the machine back to them (overseas) with a downtime of approx 6 weeks.

You should be able to replace the entire cable. You can't repair it.

The manufacturer of the cable will know if it can be spliced. If so, they probably have a kit. I used to make polishing machines that made splice kits for glass optics, not sure if anything can be done for plastic.

If the fiber cable is not available and field replaceable then start shopping for a new machine. This is BS. These age and must be replaced periodically anyway.

Thanks for your advice, My knowledge is limited, but it seems fairly obvious that the cable and couplings are off the shelf replaceable parts....my technical team are telling me that the cable is wired and calibrated into the power unit, so therefore the manufacturer needs both the unit and the cable returned in order to replace. To me this just sounds ridiculius, but...as I say, I dont know enough to say with certsinty.

It's possible that the manufacturer intentionally designed it that way, just to be able the charge for the service, since service calls/repairs are often the profit centers of some companies, like car dealerships.
