A fairly light hearted one for you:

They are having layoffs at my place. Apparently one of the deciding factors is who has a degree or not.

I have a Bachelors of Engineering (honors just so you know;-)) but apparently no one except my direct boss knew this and they were planning accordingly. He has made a point of letting senior staff know I have one but…

Just to re-enforce the point how tacky would it be to put it in a frame and mount it in my cube?

My boss and I were joking about it earlier, I’m tempted to do it just for comic effect but then, maybe not.

Opinions?

So just to clarify.

Although I grew up and got my degree in the UK I'm now in the US.

Twoballane - Apparantly HR didn't know, that's pretty much the point of the post. Also being UK I got my bachelors in just under 3 years, don't know what takes you all so long this side of the pond ;-). I agree that I suspect the degree is a minor issue and that the never ending popularity contest is the real decider.

I DONT HAVE PE, as said before I'm in exempt industry and due to my education/early career experience being in the UK it's not straight forward to get my PE.

I think a lot of this will depend on your work environment - in our area, where any one of us could be meeting with a customer in our offices, we are encouraged to have diplomas and certificates on the walls.

This must be highly variable from industry to industry. Around here most people have their degrees and their licenses up on their walls (though I don't believe there's any requirement to display either one). One of our better managers has his master's degree, his license, and his certificate for eating a 72-ounce steak. I just have my license, but only because I never got around to putting up the degrees and now I don't have the wall space for them in my cube because I've filled it with other crap.

It’s not so much that I think it is tacky to hang diplomas, certificates, etc.... as it is entertaining to poke fun of the “kind” of folks who do so…

Star to Limey, Those digi pic frames things are so sweet.

I could put my 6th grade "Good Citizen" award on the wall!

senselessticker--but it's only material for poking fun with if you think it's tacky.

I display my graduate certificate along with my PE certificates.

I earned them, I appreciate them, more over respect them, so I display them.

Within the industry and general work environment I'm in... most perceive the "cert hanger's" as being in the same stereotype as the "Micheal Scott's" of the world...

It's completely unfair to make such assumptions of course, but there IS some truth to it...

Hey, where abouts in the States?
When I visited an office in the Midland Odessa area, all the engineer had on his wall were dead animal's heads complete with antlers.
I'd guess HR would get that message pretty clear and take care he didn't add some exhibits of the two legged HR variety.

I think I'll start displaying my;

Marriage certificate to help explain why I drink.
Kids birth certificates to explain why I have grey hair ... and drink.
Grandkids birth certificates to explain why I'm so happy, but always tired.
Birth certificate ... just to prove I really do have a father.

Heck, I went to a decent school and took a tough program, why shouldn't I feel proud. I don't hang it for others to see, I hang it for myself.
The P.Eng also took quite some time and effort so again, no reason to be proud of it.

ctopher - the sad thing is: with the way things are going in the U.S.... being a U.S. citizen may actually work against you if you are trying to keep your job...

I never put EIT after my name.

but is it tacky to put

<your name>, EIT

as the heading of your /resume/, when applying for jobs that are looking for an EIT

rwj2005,

EIT would be appropriate on a resume in my opinion as it relates to the progression of your professional experience. You would also be showing that you satisfy the advertised requirement for an EIT as needed to fulfill the position. Years down the road if you have not gone on to attain your PE, then I would think about dropping the EIT from a resume as it would be unlikely that you would be looking/working at positions outside the industrial exemption arena.

Regards,

I think the movie is, "Garden State," where there is a scene in a doctor's office with the walls so covered with framed diplomas and certificates that there are a couple on the ceiling.

When I graduated I put my degrees in a box in my room at my parents house. When I went back a few years later they were framed and one the wall. I never thought much of framing them but since my Mom did it I have hung them in my house since.

I may soon be moving into sales so I will definitly display my degree and my PE. Even though my PE has nothing to do with sales, it will be good for my clients to see that I have some cedentials behind me. This on its own does not make me good or bad at what I do but it certainly can't hurt.

GSTeng's post certainly helps to reinforce my point about the "kind" of people who will hang their degrees/certs. LOL.. engineers who become salesmen is a GREAT example!!! j/k GSTeng... I always give my engineer turned salesmen friends a hard time about "selling out" and becoming a salesman. They, in turn, laugh all the way to the bank...

I should take mine to Kinkos and have it increased to a poster-sized monstrosity. I wouldn't say it would be as tackey as it is egotistical.
