A fairly light hearted one for you:

They are having layoffs at my place. Apparently one of the deciding factors is who has a degree or not.

I have a Bachelors of Engineering (honors just so you know;-)) but apparently no one except my direct boss knew this and they were planning accordingly. He has made a point of letting senior staff know I have one but…

Just to re-enforce the point how tacky would it be to put it in a frame and mount it in my cube?

My boss and I were joking about it earlier, I’m tempted to do it just for comic effect but then, maybe not.

Opinions?

Well, we have a scanner and a colour plotter so, with a little effort I could blow it up to at least E size!

And so you should.

Make up a pad of them and use them for desk blotters.

Desk Blotters, I like it Mike.

KENAT,

I recall that you had to go through a similar downsizing process described in other threads, where you picked up the checker's responsibilities on top of your original job.

Now there's another round of layoffs? Maybe you should be hanging your resignation notice on the wall.

In my country it is not appropriate to hang any certificates or diplomas on the wall. If one does so, most of other colleagues will not take him in serious anymore. In my company from 7 engineers 3 are MSEE and 4 others are BSEE who just study their MS's. But nobody is going to take this as something exceptional.

According to me answer on the question "To hang or not to hang" (please Shakespeare to pardon me) should be according to your society mentality and finally according your company policy. If it is acceptable to display such things - display them, you have nothing to shame. If it is not - better not to display but again you have nothing to shame. In both cases your degree is your achievement.

I remember when 20 years ago started my career my Head of Department had table with "Eng. Petrov" under his doorbell - and he really deserved it! But the second person with "Eng. ..." under doorbell was actually a mistake of educational system. Well, now he works for Parson's, but ... :~/

It may be like this in theory and practice, but in real life it is completely different.

lewtam, your memory is correct and I'm looking.

Well I made 2 copies of my degree cert. Gave one to a bemused looking HR rep a few days after lay-offs and told here that I understood my file didnt' show me having a degree so here was one for my file.

The other is put up in a fairly inconspicuous position that 90% of people will never see.

I'll probably take it down once my point is made as I agree with those who doubt it's appropriate.

Not to change the subject, but I believe it relates. Is putting P.E. (Professional Engineer) after your name considered tacky also? It is my companies policy to do this, so I am just wondering about everyones thoughts.

Maybe a separate thread but, in a non 'exempt' area of industry I'd think putting PE after your name was a very good idea, if not mandatory in some circumstances.

IMHO, adding P.E. after you name isn't tacky in business situations or correspondence. Engineers worry about getting just recognition. Adding P.E. helps.

However, in non-work situations, I wouldn't use P.E. It even irks me greatly when doctors want to be called Doctor outside their office, especially when they correct people to call them Doctor. There is only one Doctor - Doctor Who!

I say put it up. What else are you going to do with it? Hang it up at home? Leave it in a box in the attic? Might as well put it where it might be of some use.

Not everyone can tell you're a good engineer just by looking at you. Some may not have the expertise to judge. Credentials help satisify people that you really can do the job. It helps build their confidence and trust in you. If you have the credentials, then it's probably a disservice to yourself and them not to show them.

That said, mine is sitting in a box in the attic.

You could lean it against something as not to be as tacky as hanging it on the wall.

just have it placed so it looks like you dont care about it, but people can still see it. Like half buried under paperwork.

Or you could make sure its will sealed in plastic or glass and use it to set your coffee cup on.

Kenat:
If the decision factor for the lay-off is the having/not having a degree, then don't say nothing, wait until they fire you and then sue the bas***ds for unlawful dismissal. Ask millions of $$$ and retire.

Regarding my degree, I'm pretty sure that I saw it in one of my appartment office drawers some years ago... I hope that I don't need to hang it, it is not so pretty and the incompetent that typed it, made it with typo, as far as I remember...

You could make a mouse pad out of it...

Take care & have fun!
